Looking at Building Custom Aimtrak Wheel for myself

**edit:- page 4 has xml and media by @dougan78**

I haven't yet implemented RL. I'm waiting until I can dedicate a few straight hours to getting it done right and not having a system in a state of flux where nothing is working. I might just eventually have to break down though and start the upgrade to RL in pieces.

That being said with the ability to choose the emulator at a game level, I think this really opens up the opportunity for some amazing custom categories. My first thought for me is to make a master list of all aimtrak compatible games and systems and create a master list. My goal is to eventually have a separate wheel that I can go to and everything on that list will be pre-configured to work with my aimtrak mouse. I would have to have to separate emulators and have the games probably all in one folder but it should be possible with RL.

This is my list of game systems that work with aimtrak, I included games that I know were lightgun games but I haven't tested every last one of them. I am curious if anyone knows of any systems or games that I am missing. I found the CD-i emulator seems to work alright with aimtrak but I couldn't get any of the exclusives for that system to load with the emulator, just the various ports of American Laser Games.

I have been meaning to get to the Atari and CPC emulators to test but if someone knows which emulator to use that would of great help as I build this out.

Check out this thread and feel free to thank me :) - http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?26351-Aimtrak-and-PCSX2 . I built a custom .dll that re-works the buttons for PS2 before finding out from Andy about the drivers.

In the nuvee program they also built some .ppf files that will convert many of the PS1 games that didn't work natively with guncons to work with it so I ran that against die hard and couple others and it seems to work great.

iep! i have two scorpions with wingun, only crt, but even the best pc lightguns

freezesms for sms

gensplusgx sdl for mcd genesis sms (f12- change device f2- fullscreen, f1- appears black cursor, but reads in absolute coords) it is a testing port, the author is focused in wii and gx ports i think

vice - c64

emuzwin - spectrum, spanish gunstick

bluemsx- msx

JavaGX4000 -gx 4000

atari8 bit - altirra

dosbox- windowed (blood bath, westphaser)

Using Two littele programs named PEexplorer and resource hacker you can hide the crosshairs of some of them. (emuzwin, big buck hunt pc, freezesms,,)

fceux seems to work better than nestopia. in nes there are some chinese or taiwan games. search them! some seems better than duckhunt, hoogans alley and the classics.. like lethal weapon, a copy of lethal enforcers or inverse?

psx Snatcher uses Justifier/Hyperblaster? have you test it?

2 years ago, when shalma did nuvee pluggin, i was asking him about adding guncon support to psx policenauts, as is the only port in english (translated in 2009).

He said me that it wasnt so easy, but some days later, he got it.

So, applying the two patches to policenauts, you have it in enlish and with gun support in p2. I think its amazing playing this kojima great game as good as this, and have to great Shalma, who i never talked again with.

I'm glad to see you here. I saw some other thread where you had talked about genesis support but I you hadn't been to that site or this one in a while and thought I wasn't going to be able to ask that question.

So far on the PS1 side I can't get extreme ghostbusters to work with my aimtrak because it wants me to press a start button and I can't seem to get it along with the top gun drivers to produce a legitimate start key in. I did find a way to get both buttons working on the gun though, they just happen to be reversed due to the way the correction is mapped.

It is my understanding that some people have managed to get the aimtrak working in PS1 prior to making it work in guncon mode but I'm still a little hazy about that. If they did it might be possible to get snatcher and area 51 to work (although I'm not worried really about area 51 with mame). I haven't honestly booted up snatcher to give it a try. I figured since none of the other justifier games worked with it in guncon mode it wouldn't work either.

I have been truly impressed with nuvee's work too. I was able to patch all of the other justifier games and get them working with his plugin. The only game I had trouble with was Rebel Assault 2 CD 2. It threw back a warning about the data not looking like quite right or something but it allowed me to patch it anyways. The game still boots but I have my reservations if the light gun levels will work when I get there.

I greatly appreciate your list above though. I'm finally caught up on my HL2 to RL conversion and am not just moving forward where I left off on HL2. My hope is to take your additional information and branch out my wheel. I haven't gotten started yet but I'm hoping within a weeks time I should be able to start finalizing my custom emulator setups and my per game loading so I can build the custom wheel and share it with others.

mm, now i dont use pcsxr and nuvee, as i had two topguns but they both crashed as were shit.

now i use ps2 scorpions with lightguns and this dontesnt work with nuvee. i use psx emu, which can be played with dual lightgun with wingun, but has problems with some game and offscreen shoots.

I remember rebel assault had some level that didnt work ok, its true.

I think ghostbusters start was a two button combination, a+b i suppose.

another interesant thing i found time ago was that:

http://frenzy.gl.tter.org/

it was dessigned to work with dual actlabs lightguns, which has an specific system for dual action. But it can be used with one topgun and suppose with aimtrak too. But only the quake one, half life didnt work for me

I have somewhat been running with this idea lately and I think that on top of setting up a separate gun games wheel we are going to run into other potential issues: Aimtrak's don't like dinput but if you are like me and you use a controller for most emulators all your controls are already setup based on dinput. You will need to reprogram your main controllers for light guns sometimes and that can be inconvenient.

We might want a little custom AHK that copies over / writes to INI/cfg files on launch and returns the other one on exit. That will take some thought...

There is also under pinkimo's folder on the gold FTP some art & themes that go well.

As far as 3do gun games I know Fourdo does not support light guns however Freedo does.

Did you create a database xml yet?

I like this as a project, let's keep moving and post progress. I agree anyone with helpful input please chime in.

I agree with connorsdad that it seems like the easiest way to ensure the controls are set properly. I'm glad to see tastyratz is interested. I have invested quite a bit of time in just trying to get systems working with the aimtrak and trying to increase my compatablity. I have also been distracted by working on a new hyperlist. With renewed interest I might change focus again and start working more on this. My initial goal was to get everything possible working outside of the custom wheel and then work in the new custom wheel but I'm getting to the point of wanting to just implement it as-is and than add whatever I manage to eventually get working after the fact.

I'm following this with interest. I bought an Aimtrak a while ago but haven't got around to setting it up properly as my cab building plans were put on hold. However, I'm thinking of buying another one at some point, then putting one sensor bar in my (as yet unbuilt) cab and one on the TV, which the cab will be connected to for sofa bound gaming.

I'll need to see if it's possible to swap between the screens without having to recalibrate both guns each time. Having multiple copies of MAME set up sounds like a good place to start.

You don't need multiple copies of mame, it's about the only emulator where you can specify which monitor you want your image to appear on, on a per rom basis too :)

Ah, that's true but I had in mind to just display everything (HyperSpin & all emus) on either the monitor or the TV depending on how the mood takes me, using Display Fusion profiles and hotkeys to switch displays. Thinking about it, if both the TV and the monitor are 1920x1080 and I get the same ratio of viewing distance / screen size, I may not have to worry about recalibrating the guns.

I haven't had a whole lot of luck with either when it comes to the handful of games I can't play on daphne-singe.

Just as an FYI to everyone here, I have been making good progress on this reality. It will still be a little while before I'm ready to put my files up but I have my initial XML file. I'm currently running through the configuration of each system and game. That likely will be the most painful process. Then I have to test and make sure the list is good. For my initial release I'm going to just release the sets I identified in my first post as working with Aimtrak. That alone will take a while. Then I will eventually add some of the other older systems like Atari and C64 if I can get them working in a way that seems worthwhile with the Aimtrak.

My aimtrak is off by 2-3 inches if I lean forward while sitting on my couch 10 feet away or raise the gun a foot or less. Yes you will need to recalibrate for sure they are VERY sensitive to calibration.

Does freedo work with aimtrak? it have an strange lightgun plugin, wich seems to work in relative coords, so i can play with mouse but cant with guns, can you?

I found an english translated version of freedo and have been trying like mad to get it to work but no such luck. Did you add a plugin or use what was in the package?

I'm jealous. Did you get it working in demul? I can't get it to recognize mouse input. Do you mind posting your demule.ini and paddemule.ini ? Just paste into the comment field and put a code tag around each (kinda like quote but with the word code in brackets.

That is another piece, not only creating the wheel but miniguides links or steps to getting other emulators that don't work out of the box to actually recognize the aimtraks. Not to sidetrack startrek's AWESOME work here I salivate for or anything, I just want to centralize and collect thoughts on getting these puppies going.

Oh well, so much for that idea! Thanks for the info. As it happens, my sensor bar isn't even stuck on top of my TV yet as the bezel is so thin, but I've just got hold of a plastic bracket that might do the job after I've cut it down to size. Maybe this weekend...

Yeah it comes with the territory of how it moves and judges the IR-lights. I have found that the wireless sensor bar that I use for the Wii works very well with the aimtrak. I have gotten distracted by playing light gun games on my big screen from across the living room.

If you are referring to Atomiswave and Naomi yeah you can use demul for that. I found the hard way that you just have to calibrate every game before they work. Let me know if you are having any other issue. I had calibrated other games in the past but I didn't realize at first that calibration was so far off.

Yeah most systems aren't too hard to setup but the PS2 was very cumbersome. For those interested in the PS2 setup I walked another through the painful setup on a separate location: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,133282.0.html . It would probably help to turn the data into more useful steps.

I like what you are thinking tastyratz. It would be great to see some guides built into the main wiki: http://hyperspin-fe.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page . We may be able to get someone to add a separate section for Aimtrak emulator configuration so it easy to find.

I was thinking last night about the naming for this system. Personally I was thinking about calling the system Aimtrak because for me it is being setup with systems I have tested on the Aimtrak. That being said I realize many other similar guns will work with this also. I may want to leave it up to vote here and see if people are interested in the system being called Aimtrak or Light Gun Games (or something similar). I saw the theme earlier I can use if we go generic but if not I will eventually need to see if I can get some help for the default themes and wheel images.

Yeah I had a feeling people would lean that way. My initial goal was Aimtrak specifically as that is my item of choice but as I thought about it further I had a feeling it was going to require some changing and really opens it up for others to use. So I will need to re-name everything away from Aimtrak. I only want to change it one time so I'm going to verify everyone is happy with whatever I choose. It looks like the theme that is already created is called Gun Games so I'm leaning towards just calling it that for simplicity but if people would like it differently I can call it Light Gun Games, or whatever. I just want to do it once. Thanks.
