Need some cabinet Advice

Recommended Posts

I am working towards building my first Bartop Cabinet and I am not sure of the size and style of monitor to use. I have seen 19" monitors used but I was thinking that for a 2 player setup i would go with a 22" 16 x 9. My question is will this work with most emulators or am I going to have a lot of black areas on the screen?

Also do most people leave the screens in the surround they came in or strip them out so they just have the screen and the electronic for the video and power?

Which way round do you put your screen in? Do you have it as it is supposed to be seen or did you turn it through 90 degress?

What i mean is do you have the monitor as if it was sat on your desk?

Its just like at my desk or like a tv set horizontal as most games play this way, in my dk3 cab its vertical as that cab is just vertical games.

You can play vertical games on a horizontal screen those well have black boarders on the sides, you can use bezel art in mame tho which helps fill in the screen on those games and gives it a nice look.

If mounted horizontally you will always notice the borders to a little extent. Try taking some cardboard and rest 2 pieces along each side. Play with it for a couple days and see if it doesn't bother you too much.

Another thing to consider is to mount your monitor vertically (like mentioned above). I did this to my Bartop and don't regret doing it. It is really nice playing vertical shoot em ups and pinball on the beast!

Since you have not purchased your monitor yet, that might be difficult. What kind of games do you plan on playing? That might help you hone in on a 4:3 or a 16:9 screen.

If you are not building a dedicated vertical cabinet, then go horizontal since there is only a hand full of vertical games in comparison to horizontal games. All vertical games can be played horizontally anyway, you just have less real estate. If you do build a vertical cab--me and most others turn the monitor counter clockwise 90 degrees so that what is normally the bottom of your screen; it would be on your left. Most my cabs I build around the monitor, so that determines whether I leave the monitors bezel on or off. Most of the time I don't bother taking it off. Most people insert an acrylic bezel with a black border to protect and color enhance the screen, which will hide the original plastic bezel casing of the monitor anyways. I personally would go with the 22" horizontally if building a 2 player bartop.

are most the games you play use a vertical or horizontal screen setup? i would judge it from there.....if your more of a fighter gamer then for sure a horiz... but if you play a lot of pacman, dk, a lot of vert then i would leave it vert.....

i do horiz....i don't mind the little border around my vert games.....but do like the full screen of Defender, Street Fighter...etc...

all in your preference
