Worklog: Custom Vewlix - My first build

Recommended Posts

Hope Manic is ok, but I can't wait to see how he is progressing. Looks like an awesome build and a great way to see how well the ArcadeFS plans work for him...

Looking good! Are the sides and the "base" (the lower part where the PC goes in) still separate pieces at this point of the build? So they can be painted white and black (or any other colours of course) easily?

And another question: The backpanels are not shown here, but on Maxime's website they seem to pretty much seal the back of the machine, but the site shows mostly renders it seems (http://www.arcadefromscratch.com/index.php/modeles/la-borne-hd) , so I wonder how they fit on your machine in real life?

Keep up the great work, looks to be an awesome machine! Thanks for sharing!

Never shared a picture of the controlpanel so here it is!

@JaronSenna - I'm pretty sure the base and sites are stuck together. Which I kinda regret, but deamed necessary at the moment.

Not sure what you mean in your second question.

I have most likely already asked this question somewhere here, but would like some suggestions for speakers to use in this cab. I've been looking around and done some testing, but found nothing I like or there's an issue with the formfactor. Hoping to get some responds so I can finish this up.

I used a 2.1 kit for computer and i have replaced the two speakers by pionner two way cars speakers with black grid.

It sounds very good ans looks good.

Not sure whether you want to go 'authentic' or not. The rest of your awesome and accurate build indicates that you might! I used the Logitech Z-5450 running in dual stereo mode. Left and right channels both come out of 2 sets of speakers whilst retaining the use of the subwoofer.

Edit: I de-cased them:

Mounted them on MDF board:

And found some fairly authentic looking speaker grilles:

Not sure what you mean in your second question.

What I meant is: have you made the back panels already? And if so, could you share how their shape fits? From what I can see, they have a special chamfer?

@emixama: I'll PM you. I quit facebook and don't want to hijack this thread.

But again Manicshere, great build so far!

Update!
How have I not finished yet?
Simple. Other projects and life has simply gotten in the way.
Everything has been primed and sanded as seen in the picture below.

I'm actually a bit further with the build, but that will be in my next update.
For now I've reuploaded all images and reorganized the worklog, next update should be a lot more exciting.

Going for clear plexiglass? I always liked the lightly smoked ones.

@THK All plexiglass on this build (Marquee and on CP) will have artwork behind it and I think clear will desplay it best. Would also work best with my colorscheme I think.
Thanks for the input

@THK Ah yes. It looks great, but it wont have a bezel at all. In that regard I will be keeping it authentic. Although I do take a lot of liberties with the design.

Glad to see you working on this again, I bet your Parents\grandparents are too if it's  still in their garage. ;)

@gigapig haha me too. Parents are loving it. My dad is helping out a lot with the build and my grandparents house is MASSIVE so they don't mind a bit. Perfect circumstances.

I've also been following your latest build. Great job man!!

@Samorite Thanks for the tip!

Today I made some progress. Back and front of the lower segment have been mounted.

So many things have been finished and just needs to be assembled.
Not in that big of a hurry though as it's way to cold to paint atm.

Thanks one thing I found even painting in quite a warm Autumn, the damn drying time. When you just want to get on and get it done.

I'd go back to the garage, pick up a piece I'd painted and leave a dirty great fingerprint on it or return to find flies trying to get themselves off the paint trap. In know there's little fly legs still under that paint work.

Hello I have been follow your post.  I have bought plan from arcadefromscratch.com and I see it use 22mm and 18mm boards.  So my question was did you use 22mm and 18mm or just 18mm?  Because I ask you the question is, there are no 22 mm in the hardware stores. Thanks

      Hi All

I have been lurking on these forums for a few months trying to get my head around Hyperspin with varying degrees of success and then more failure however i have put that on the back burner for a while whilst i build my 32 inch vewlix clone provided from Troy at Arcadeworx ( Perth , Australia).

Just a quick background with regards to the machine build is as follows .

I was searching the internet for plans to build a cabinet to house a PC running  Hyperspin and an Xbox 360 running RGH so i can copy all my current games onto it .

Whilst i was doing this i found Arcadeworx and after some searching of their designs i decided to buy it and get the ball rolling .

The price for the cabinet was approx $600 Australian dollars plus $ 100 delivery to Sydney which i had no issue with .

I should have stopped there however i spent another 20 minutes looking through the internet and found a Vewlix machine machine ( 32 inch 2 player ) about 2 hours from me that a guy wanted $700 for , The Machine has a 600 in one jamma board installed which is nice but misses out on all the Mortal kombat games which is extremely dissapointing

A decision was made that i should buy it and suffer my Wife's drama after , she was actually pretty happy with it once i got it home and even played street fighter 2 for an hour hahaha.

In an ideal world i will build the MDF clone and sell the Vewlix at the end to recoup some costs however my 9 yr old does enjoy playing so i may keep both .

I have put together the arcade cabinet now which took about an hour and i will keep you all updated on the build as it progresses .

      thanks all

Well I have been reluctant to share my work on here since I find forums to be hyper critical but I figure its about time I show this thing off. I started this project last Feb. and am nearing completion. I wanted to build something unique but still very Japanese and also practical. It comes apart into two pieces at the base of the screen. I designed the thing in Adobe Illustrator working to scale. I'm still debating on what color to paint it. I really like the way it looks with white primer but a semi gloss epoxy paint coating would be nice as well. Let me know what you guys think. The latest thing I worked out was the backlit custom marquee at the top. Making the sticker mask and painting that was way more work than I wanted it to be.

Here is the beginning of the construction of my other cab, this is the second of 2 custom vewlix cabs based off of the Kraylix and Donnovan Myers Vewlix cabs
Kray is building the Control Panels for both cabs and should be done in about 3 weeks...
