cant get nebula or winkawaks to run cps1-2?

hey all. ive been at this for quite a bit and did all the research i can. Basically im just trying to add my cps1-3 games as well as neo geo. Heres my question. I have cps3 emulator which i set up as a new emulator for cps3 games. Those are working fine. So i now am trying to set up cps 1 and 2, as well as neo geo. I saw that winkawaks and nebula can both be used to run these, but im having trouble launching either one. In RL I set up the winkawaks and nebula emulators with the exe directories and modules, etc. I can launch the emulator itself from within RL. I then choose cps2 from the left list, and set it up as always. i set the rom directory, set default emulator as winkawaks, and audit my roms. they all show up. But when i launch a game, nothing happens. I then tried to set nebula as the default emulator, but first had to disable "suggested emulators" to give me the full list. So i set nebula as the emulator, and tried to launch a game and it launched the first game! but after i exit the game and try to load another nothing happens, and a minute later i get an error saying "Waiting for nebula ahk to become active"

 

so any suggestions on what im doing wrong? or what is the best way to run cps1 and 2 and neo geo? i see everyone says use mame or mess? but im on mame 149 and cant seem to load any of those games.
