MAME Hi/Lo display missing

Hi guys Ive got a question to ask and wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

 

Ive built a driving cab and have setup MAME in HS. When I launch a mame game from HS the on screen Hi/Lo gear shift isnt there but when I run a game just using mame outside of HS the gear shift is there. Ive attached 2 screen shots the first one with the gear shift on screen(mame) and the 2nd without (HS\mame)

Im completely puzzled by this. I have tried various versions of mame that include the gear shift but same result.
