Wheel/Video sounds heard in background with MAME games

I have a dozen+ systems in my HS setup, but 90% of the time, launching a MAME game results in the game launching but the frontend sounds can be heard running in the background, with the other 10% loading normally and HS losing focus like it should. None of the other systems exhibit this problem, only MAME. At first I thought that it was an issue with bezels (my MAME games are the only ones with bezels) slowing down loading time and breaking RocketLauncher/HS's obscure magicks, so I moved bezels out of their folder and tried again but the problem persisted. I've tried different MAME versions and launching without themes/bezels with no luck. The maddening part is it's just MAME and none of the other systems. Any ideas?
