Help with creating simple, generic themes for games without them

Brand new to Hyperspin, just in the stages of trying to customize things & set it all up.  I have managed to get 90% or so of the themes I need for my roms, but I've been having some trouble trying to just use a simple image (say flyer or something) as a theme for the games I don't have.  I was advised to make an XML file called theme.xml & write <theme> in the first column & </theme> in the second, save image I want to use to background.png & zip it.  What's happening so far is I can see the image in backrgound when I go to game in wheel (not centered though), but dimmed out with a "XML error cancelling theme" message over it..If I move the wheel up though the image brightens to normal & message is gone...I've also tried to add a couple other images to the .zip & name them artwork1.png, artwork2.png, etc just to see what would happen & those didn't show up at all. 

 

I'm not trying to do anything fancy, no animations or anything & for the record I have zero photoshop skills..would just like to make simple substitute themes for games that don't have any & if not too diificult allow a video snap to show as well.  Thanks in advance for any help

(EDIT): these are the games that I can't find themes for...I have a bad memory, but I haven't messed with MAME in YEARS & recently got an updated rom set of all roms I had previously..half of these I honestly dont even know what the hell they are, I musta just saw them in the related section of Youtube arcade videos a while ago & decided to add them lol...a few I'm sure aren't even emulated in MAME either:
