powering up computer, properly shutting it off (feedback)

I have been sitting on a MAME project for 10 years now.  Wow, has a lot changed.  As I do my research to get back in the game, I am trying to find the best way to power up my computer, and properly shutting down.  What are best practices?  I do have an old I-PAC 2 which doesnt support power control, etc.  I see the new i-pac does.  Would it be easier to buy the new i-pac for that, and are there other features i'm missing from a new ipac interface rather than my ten year old ipac?

thanks!

I second "wire up a dedicated button" and set hyperspin to shutdown on exit.  My dedicated button is on the CP, but you could also easily hide it in the back.

Thanks for the answers, that was my answer as well, just wanted to get some feedback first.  My other question is how do you exit hyperspin?  I have not even played around with hyperspin yet so I am sure the answer is easy, just thought I could get some ducks in a row before I start.  Can you exit hyperspin with in the hyperspin menu?

Yes, If you hit the back button or "Esc" from the main menu, I have mine set to ask if you would like to exit hyperspin.  If you answer yes, I have mine set to shutdown the PC.  Its all easily setup in the settings, but you don't want to set that up til last (after all emulators are working the way you want) that way you can exit to desktop to make changes (or Alt+F4 to exit after shutdown is set).  I also decided to have an different video play every time I start up my cabinet, so my actual shutdown action starts a script which rotates the start-up video, and them initiates shutdown.  Let me know if you are interested in something like that and I will post my script/settings.

I recommend using a smart strip in your cab as well. In my cabs I have a hidden push button on the back or under (pin) that is wired to the MB as described above. This button powers on and shuts down the pc through windows. The pc is plugged into the "master" outlet of the power strip and everything else is is plugged into the "slave" outlets on the strip. Makes for a clean single button on/off.
