Hyperspin wheel artwork pixelated?

I just installed Hyperspin 1.3 on Windows 8.1. I noticed the artwork is very pixelated, almost as if it is optimized for 800*600 resolution or less. I am running in Fullscreen 2880*1800.

 

I turned on "Image Smoothing" and selected "App quality: Best" in HyperHQ, but the extreme pixelation remains.

 

Is there maybe a setting to switch to hi-res artwork or some other blur filter to remove the pixelation?

 

I downloaded the 1942 theme for Mame. The background there looks kind of ok and smooth. But the airplane images in the front layer are pixelated and wobbly, as if no filtering is applied to them.

 

It looks like the image smoothing is not applied to all images in each theme. It is not just the planes in the 1942 theme, the blinking "Press Start" text is also pixelated. while the little animated joystick appears smooth. I suspect it might be a windows 8.1 problem.
