Understanding Bios/CHDs in MAME

Just seeking some guidance on how bios' and CHDs work with roms in Mame. From what I understand roms are constantly being updated. Along side their updates, bios' and CHDs get updated too. On top of that emulators like MAME get updated as well. Stop me if I am wrong, but if you have an old rom and a newer CHD/bios or vice versa the game wont launch in MAME. Is this correct?

To make things clearer for example, if I have a Capcom vs. SNK 2 rom and the CHD for it and I attempt to launch it in MAME and it fails, what causes it not to launch properly? Is it the outdated rom file? Is it the outdated CHD file? Is it the outdated MAME emulator? Or is it a combination of them all?

I've gone through quite a bit of documentation and cannot dig up an answer. If anyone has some insight or can point me to some concise documentation I'd really appreciate it.

Dont worry about cvs2, that is a naomi game and wont run very well (if at all) in mame. Not every rom/chd/bios is updated with every mame update. But you will save yourself a lot of headaches if you start with the same version roms/chds/emulator.

Interesting. I didn't realize certain arcade games had preferred arcade emulators. I thought all arcade style roms were universally playable on all the arcade emulators. This explains why third strike has never worked for me in MAME and only on a CPS3 emulator(s). I'm sure this applies to other Capcom fighters and games in general.

In regards to saving headaches, what's the best route for staying updated? I see GIT is an option, but what if I want to manually check each rom or CHD in my library for compatibility? How do I check which roms, CHDs, bios' and emulators are compatible with each other?

I'm guessing there are tools for things like this.
