My Bartop Arcade Cabinet (Work In Progress)

Hi All,

This is my first bartop arcade build. I have to say that I'm a complete novice at this kind of thing and I have never worked with wood before starting this project.

Here's a pic of a test build of the unit itself (this is Tipper27's design).

Marking out mount points:

Test assembly in progress:

The unit fully assembled (the speaker housing's placement in the cab is off, this will be rectified)

Taking a hack saw to an old PC case so that I can use it's external ports in the unit (external USB, audio etc) and also to use it as a reference point for cutting the back door of the unit slightly:

Taking that same hack saw to a set of USB powered speakers (for those in UK / Ireland this set are decent enough and are USB powered so that negates the need for a PSU: http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/9093142/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7COffice%2C+PCs+and+phones%7C14418968/c_2/3%7C19780850%7CPC+and+laptop+accessories%7C14419129/c_3/4%7Ccat_14419129%7CPC+speakers%7C14419136.htm)

Testing out the positioning of speakers on the speaker grill:

And finally (for now anyway) gave the unit a lick of paint last night... this was 3 or so coats of black gloss spray paint, she's drying at home as we speak.

If you're about Tippers27 you'll notice that I kept the coardboard that you shipped the pieces to me in for this very purpose!

Seems to be going ok so far and I'm really enjoying this project! I'll keep you guys posted, go easy on the noob! ;-)

  • 2 weeks later...

Did alot of work on this cab over the past couple of days. I haven't wired up the CP yet but the PC is in there now...

I had to remove the back panel of the monitor and refashion it slightly as the power input was facing towards the spare shelving that I was using as a monitor mount.

Control panel being wired up (work in progress with Doctor Who keeping me company)

Control panel fully wired, tested and working. Probably not the tidiest cabelling job I could have done but I ran out of the things that I was using to latch tied cables to the MDF so had to just do my best with cable tension and cable ties.

All that's left to do now is to place an order with Game on Grafix for the marquee, get a local printer to print out some artwork for me and finish off the back panel and it's pretty much good to go!
