Mame Upgrade - Refresher

I haven't really ever "updated" Mame since .148 was when I first setup my cabinet, and I never messed with it since then.  I just wanted to see if anyone could guide me to the best approach for updated the emulator (the roms I know what to do).  Here is what I am am planning on doing

 

1) I am using Gigapigs Hyperspin build he uploaded (Thanks gig  ) as a baseline.  

 

2) I will then in oldhags compiled mame with NoNag/High Score/  etc.  

 

3) Copy my existing "hi" folder into the new Mame folder.  **** This is the key step I want to figure out, I want to make sure I maintain / transfer my current set of high scores from my setup to the new version of mame.  

 

Any help, specifically on #3 or anything else I am missing would be appreciated.
