RetroArch - Button Config Questions

OK, so after searching online for the best way to configure a controller for a specific system and keep it that way for the rest of the time i play games with that system on RetroArch for awhile now and figured I might as well ask around here too.

So what im trying to do is for example right now I have

SNES

Sega Genesis

Both playing from RetroArch

I want to be able to configure the controller when I go into a sega genesis game and press F1 and configure it and it stay configured.

And then go to SNES game and pull up F1 options and configure that controller separately.

Then if i closed down everything and start everything up i would like it to use those configs everytime i open that specific system and start playing a game.

I thought i just go into input and do the controller settings and save state but that didnt work out too well after reentering a different system it seems like it didnt save when i return to the system's controls i initially changed.

Is this easier than im making it?

I'm not at my pc but if memory serves right once you've set controls for that system press z to bring you to first screen and cursor down to save config, also check before exiting what retro calls the emulated system (at the bottom possibly left or right).

Go into your emulator folder and in retros config folder,at the folder tabs sort by date and it should bring the last system and another file with it,this should be the same name retro saved your config click on the system file (e.g sega Genesis) and add "backup" tithe end of it just in case a mistake is made to revert back to.

Now the other file rename it sega Genesis (make it exactly the same capital letters where needed)

Hope that helps if your still unsure check out simply austins vid on you tube for retroarch I'm sure he's shows an example on there!
