Hyperspin and ZX Spectrum

I've finished building a cabinet and I'm now setting it up to run all the games from my mis-spent youth.

 

I've got MAME working brilliantly and I'm now working on the Spectrum via Fuse on Retroarch.

 

I can get the games to run but wondered how other people here go about navigating the menus etc and actually playing the games with their joystick/button combos? Do you just still use the keyboard? Or is there some wizardry that I don't know of that will let me navigate the menus/play games with just my joystick and arcade buttons?

 

I'm guessing I'm stuck using the keyboard - to try and select cursor joystick to then use my actual joystick? Or using the keyboard to choose 'redefine' keys if it's an option and then define my set up. But... thought I'd ask the question anyway in case someone has come up with an innovative way of using the spectrum with this setup
