Mame xml help

Hi guys,

 

currently building a standup 2 player with trackball hyperspin cabinet. My first one.... for my son (and me!).

 

I have my hyperspin drive but Mame (Arcade classics) is just MASSIVE. I have heard that this can be cured by using a relevant Mame.xml file placed in the databases folder. I managed to find a modified XML which seemed to be fine but noticed 2p versions of 4p games like simpsons / sunset riders etc weren't in there..

 

So I would like help on 2 things :

- have 1 mame wheel titled "All arcades ever" with everything BUT still filtered for 2player only / no mojong / no adult(porn) adult gore is totally fine) / no duplicates  / no playchoice(megadrive-nes-snes etc).... To be honest, I could use the XML I mentioned above but if someone could advise how to add games to the XML that would be great. I did try and copy the "Sunset riders 2p" part from the original XML and add it to this new XML but Sunset riders still didn't show when I booted hyperspin.. Don't know why.

 

- have a 2nd mame wheel titled "Arcade classics" - Filtered the same as above but with a reasonable amount of games but all the classics.. So say a couple of hundred.. Everything from Pacman, space invaders, to bombjack, to final fight, to all the street fighters, MK, KInstincts.

 

Is this possible?

Phulshof very kindly creates MAME xmls for us that have various filters applied to them.  If you go to the thread and follow the link to phulshof's dropbox - you should find something close to what you want.

Tonesmalone : Great thank you... That's got me started. However, a question if I may... in his drop box theres many XMLs which are spot on... One is great which is "no casino/mah-jong/mature/quiz/electro/utilities" - BUT he has another in his "Players" folder which is entitled "mame no clones 1_2 players.xml"... I want all aspects from both of these XML's.. Can I just copy/paste combine them into one super turbo XML?

The reason for that is the size of adding all possible combinations. If there's a specific set you'd like I can always add it.

you're probably busy so please don't take your time up on my account, but what I'm after is the following :

 

My mame wheel to have "No mojong / quiz / silly adult naked / utilities / electro" - and also be "max of 2 players / no clones-duplicates apart from the 2 player versions of 4 player games i.e: sunset riders, TMNT, Simpons etc... Also, if possible I don't want any of the playchoice things... Ive seen various Megadrive / Nintendo games in there.. I remember as a kid seeing these machines in pubs where you get say 5 minutes for 20p. I think its those.

Most of that's not too hard to do for me, but adding the 2 player clone of 4 player games like Sunset Riders leaves a very important question: which one? I need some way to automate this to make it doable, so I could add the first one I find; is that acceptable?

Hi phulshof - Hmm good point... Erm, are you referring to region?.. If so, then Euro would be fine for all the 4player games if possible. I can only think of Simpsons, TMNT, SRiders, Gauntlet maybe?

It's not a region matter; just look at the clones of Sunset Riders. I cannot find a simple selection criterium that would work for all these games.

I think I've got it working, but it does strip quite a few games that _could_ be played with 1 or 2 players, but also with more than 2 players. Is this truly what you're looking for?

Nah, it's up to you, but games like '88 Games are for 1-4 players without a 1-2 player clone.

Take a look inside the 0.177 players directory of the XML set, and see if it's usable.

Ok cool. So i gotta think whats worse. Having people start a dedicated 4player game which messes up or get rid of some which i probably wont play anyway. Ill have a gander at it and let u know. My feeling is that we are onto a winner. . Any idea just how many of these ones that fall inbetween both categories there are?

Ive just had a quick look on my phone and when i go into your drop box then the players folder it is telling me its empty?

My apologies for that; due to the added playchoice filter, the total package grew to 1.5 GB, which was more than the space left on my dropbox. It should be up and running now, and contain the filters you requested.

I truly have no idea how many games for > 2 players do not have dedicated controls so that they would work fine for 2 players as well.

Hi phulshof. Ok i finally got round to trying the xml that you kindly made for me. At first glance looks ace. Lots missing out as needed. Wondered tho if you could look into something for me. I looked for good ol sunset riders and its the megadrive version? One of the things i really cant stand in mame is anything but arcade games. So wondered how to change this to the 2p arcade version but then i think is this the only megadrive game in there? I ideally wanted all playchoice (megadrive) out of there too.

Also i had a quick nose for turtles arcade but couldnt find it. My son was being a pest so only had the chance to look for teenage mutant... And tmnt.... Couldnt see it there

Any ideas massively welcome

Did you turn on clones visibility in HyperSpin? For Sunset Riders I see two versions:

Sunset Riders (2 Players ver ABD)

Sunset Riders (bootleg of Megadrive version)

The first is a clone of the 4 player version; the Megadrive version is an arcade conversion of that game.

 

Both TMNT versions are clones of the 4 player version as well.

Ah i dont think i did. Thanks. I will go search for that and turn it on. However. With that turned on will i still have console games in there such as the megadrive sunset riders?

Yes, because some of those were ported to the arcade, so unless you can provide me with a usable filter I don't know which games qualify.

Update: did what u said and it worked. Tmnt and the others appeared! ... Theres still the megadrive version next to it but if its not possible to get rid then fine. Ideally the megaplay and playchoice removals would be perfect. I think that would cure it

The playchoice filter is in there; if you want a megaplay filter as well I'll need to add it. Not sure if these should be handled by the same flag then (an extra filter almost doubles the amount of XML files I generate, and as such the amount of space I need).

Hi phulehof. Yes i see what you are saying. I think if you have a filter where playchoice is in then it needs megaplay filtered too. Either both or none otherwise the argument as to why playchoice is filtered should apply to megaplay but oddly doesnt. Im suprised no one has ever needed such a filter really especially in a multisystem cabinet where they already have snes nes megadrive etc.
