epayson85 Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 Yes, I know they are all the same series, I mentioned it earlier, as I was saying, I went for the i7 because it was the fastest off the shelf clock speed, plus the turbo, plus the overclocking I have set (with extra cooling) Gives me the power I want. As stated above - - Intel i3 2 Core 3.7Ghz (Model 6100) Good value - Not fast enough for me. - Intel i5 4 Core 2.7 (3.3Ghz turbo boost) (Model 6400) Also nice, Also not fast enough for me. - Intel i7 4790k 4.0 (4.4Ghz turbo boost) - plus beyond with overclock. Gives the performance that I require, that's why I grabbed it. The graphics card thing... If you read the entire thread you would see that I only commented in the first place to mention how important a good GPU is for modern emulation. I dont want to sound disrespectful, but you are preaching to the converted. My whole initial point was telling the original poster how important a decent graphics card is. Plus, as I said, money was not really an issue here, I got awesome prices & I am very dedicated to emulation. I have built many rigs over the years, & always do crazy research, so you are not telling me anything I didn't already know. I absolutely appreciate the input dudes, but I am stubborn & I will always believe that there is no such thing as overkill where computers are concerned. You can be stubborn all you want you are flat out wrong though lol. Go look at dolphin benchmarks. There are always unlocked i5 CPUs right up there with high power i7s. Prior to dolphin 5.0 and the new bench marking tests i5 always beat out the i7. There is literally 0 benefit for i7s when it comes to gaming / emulation because the things that make i7s faster than an i5 are not used by games. PERIOD, end of story. They have been talking about games using multiple threads for years... the ones that do are few and far between. most use 1 to 2 so i5 and i7 are exactly the same. If you process large amounts of data all day long or transcode video constantly yea get an i7 that puppy will destroy an i5. When it comes to gaming they are the same exact CPU. If you want to spend an extra $100 to $1000 on 2 to 3 fps boost though by all means go for it. A decent GPU also is not necessary for emulation. An ok one yes. You can get a direct x 11 / opengl 4.2 card for $40 lol guess what it will handle dolphin / pcsx2 just as well as a gtx 1080... why? Because emulators hardly take advantage of gpus. It's all on the CPU because it's an emulator. An emulator emulators hardware using software and how does it do that? By cranking on your CPU. Your GPU is mostly used by more advanced features like scaling older systems to higher resolutions and filters / shaders. I have run pcsx2 on an i5 with a gt430 and everything runs great then put in an AMD 290x.... no performance boost at all. I have said it on this site many many times and will over and over again. The GPU doesn't matter. Make sure it has good drivers and supports the video plugin you want (direct 11 / 12 and opengl) that's it. You want to playore advanced PC games that's another story but strictly emulation. Don't waste your money. This is coming from a guy that really doesnt care about money. Not married, no kids, and I spent more money on my tv remote than a gtx 1070 costs. Now that wasn't overkill lol the remote is amazing but yea high power GPU for emulation is pointless. It is the definition of overkill. PS. Simply Austin just built a system for $65 with an i3 that runs everything but cemu pretty much perfectly. It's on his YouTube channel it's awesome.
Guest Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 Edited this reply, as I completely screwed it up. You can be stubborn all you want you are flat out wrong though lol. Dead right about the CPU. Still think that GPUs play more of a role than most people think, given how modern emulators render graphics. a 1080 isn't necessary no, but a mid range card does improve performance - and certainly does much more that the spend on an expense CPU.
acpowell Posted September 7, 2016 Author Posted September 7, 2016 Gentlemen (assumptions here) I don't know that this is the place for this debate. I get it, I asked possibly a loaded question, but going on for several posts about the hardware when all I needed was a yes or no is silly. I still have a question that needed to be answered and it probably won't get answered because of the bickering. I appreciate all the responses and help, but there is no sense in beating a dead horse. We might as well be having the AMD/Intel or Nvidia/AMD debate. everyone is right and everyone is wrong in their own way. Can't we all just get along! The question still yet to be answered is how I close out of Demul when I am using hyperspin as my shell. I believe it uses a part of autohotkey to allow me to push 2 buttons to close out of the game. Since I am not using explorer as my shell autohotkey isn't loading. Possibly I could get it to load as a service but I am not sure on that one. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

Can't you just use your exit emulator key set in RL? Or aren't you using that?
acpowell Posted September 7, 2016 Author Posted September 7, 2016 Can't you just use your exit emulator key set in RL? Or aren't you using that? I totally could; the issue is that I don't have a keyboard out in the open. RL's default key is ESC which works perfectly. I set a custom key string because I do not have an ESC key on my system unless I connect my keyboard. Currently it is connected but I plan to remove it when the project is done.

So what you need to do is create a default key mapper profile in RL (I prefer Joy2Key). Then you can set one button on the pad to be the exit key - and map it to ESC (usually better to not use this key). The key mapper will allow you to have the key pressed after say 3 seconds of holding the button. The default key mapper profile in RL is loaded with all systems. So just have it include button maps that you want everywhere which exit key would be one of them Make sense?

OR, if you're using an arcade control panel which is already mapped to keys - set 2 keys to be the exit key in RL. This way, emulators will exit when you press those 2 keys together. Just make those 2 keys to be buttons you never press together - like coin and p1 start for example.

I actually have done that already. That is the part that isn't working. When explorer is running coin 1 and player 2 start will exit the game. But with explorer not running only ESC will work. Prior to setting the key combination up, I was getting errors about an autohotkey related DLL which I fixed with a C++ install I believe (or something like that) so I assumed it was some part of that which was built into RL that was my issue.

I don't run explorer.exe and am able to have 2 keys mapped for exit ok. You are using the exit emulator key setting in RL for this yeah? Can you post a screenshot of it here?

I will take a screen shot when I get home tonight (it will be late). One thing I noticed is that when I "recorded" the keypresses in RL it seemed to matter which button I pressed first. It is possible I am using the wrong setting. I ended up added 2 commands one for C1+P2S and one for P2S+C1. Seems silly but if i didn't add it both ways only pressing player 2 start first would work.

Yeah, I'll also post a screenshot so you can compare. If I remember right, it wasn't clear exactly how to set it with 2 keys. It's also possible to just edit the relevant RL .ini file so I'll post the line from that for you later too.
