Police trainer & battletoads low sound level

Hi guys..

 

got an an issue with a couple of games in mame where the sound is very faint. Mainly police trainer -

ive entered the F2 in game menu and brought up the settings menu as I though I could maybe change the sound level in there somewhere. I can move the curser up and down by either clicking the trigger on the gun or pressing start, but I can't seem to actually select an option? Pressed everything and nothing happens.  Anyone had this issue? 

 

Also Battletoads is the same,. Very quite.  F2 doesn't do anything here though, and I can't find an option for service menu in TAB either?
