Controller works with MAME but not when games are launched through hyperspin?

I'm having an issue with my xbox (rock candy) controllers. They are recognized if I launch a game through MAME but whenever I launch a game from hyperspin its as if no controllers are plugged in.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
