Exit emulator key sometimes not workin

Hi guys.  Can anyone help with this?  

Ive got the exit emulator key in rlui set to 'backspace'   - ESC just would not work and the game froze (mame) when pressed so had to change it  

For some reason it seems to work when it wants?  No idea why. For some reason it seems to work ok, then was playing pac man earlier for a while, pressed my exit key...  nothing. 

Anyone else had this?
