Dropping joystick input in HS menus - HS + RL + J2K

Help please,

I am in a battle with HS!

Problem: I launch HS 1.4 and have no control of the menu from the joysticks (initially) but if I go out to JOYTOKEY and simply highlight any valid profile that has the correct ke mappings and then go back over to the HS instance that is still running I gain control but only until I navigate to a different sub-menu/emulator then I have to do the same thing again to regain control. 

 

I followed the tuts from HS, Simply Austin, and Game room Solutions to the Nth degree and triple checked everything but something is not right.

My Joytokey profiles include: Hyperspin, RocketLauncher, and Profile 1 (All have the inputs mapped to the standard HyperHQ/HS key mappings.

OS = Windows 10 x64
