how do i change controls in mameui?

I did a search, and found out i have to launch a game and press tab key, i have done that and i can see a list of options, including one to change controls for game or general, but i cant seem to select anything. Pressed enter and pretty much every other key, but nothing

any suggestions?

on some systems

partial keyboard emulation has to be selected in one of the dropdowns

but u might not have even gotten that far if that was the problem?? not sure...
