Trackball working in MAME but not in Hyperspin

Hi All,

Recently install via USB the Ultimarc Utrak trackball. It works in MAME and when I go into the game settings of Golden Tee, it seems to be sensed properly.

However, when I launch the game via HyperSpin, I can move the trackball and nothing happens except when going through the settings, it's like it's functioning as a mouse of sorts. But no gameplay.

I've looked at the following threads but not sure if editing the MAME.ini in any folder is my solution.

Anyone with some guidance where i should look?

I really hope i'm not the only one with this problem. Not that I want others to have issues but this loneliness blows. I feel like I have a mutated version of ebola when these various issues plague me.

Ho humm..

Mouse should be set to 1 in MAME.ini to enable it, but if it is working 100% outside of HyperSpin that should already be set. Is this plain command line MAME you are running both in and out of HyperSpin?

Hi Boohiss.

Yes, it is plain command line, unmodified 154 build. I just copied Golden Tee in the roms folder as a test and it works although highly senstive (the trackball, not me :)

But when I run it in hyperspin, if I go into the game options, I get nothing. If I go into the Options/Controls for (this game), i'm unable to set the X/Y Axis settings.

As I read before, there are a couple of MAMI.INI files? Is it the one in my MAME 154 folder right? If so, I have

mouse = 1

multikeyboard=1

multimouse=1

Just the ini file inside of your mame folder is fine. Maybe you need to change the ini where it says "CORE INPUT AUTOMATIC ENABLE OPTIONS". Change "trackball_device" to mouse, mouse to mouse, and lightgun to mouse. Hope that does it for you, as I'm not sure what else it could be.

Hi Boohiss. That was the item I was missing. Works like a champ in MAME now. Thank you.

Now the issue is that when I launch Mame (or more specifically Golden Tee) from Hyperspin, the trackball stops working altogether. Any thoughts?

Could you share your ini file and any other options other than "Trackball"check in HyperSpinHQ?

Go into MAME's settings when you launch Golden Tee with the tab key. Go to Game Input (for this game) and go all the way down on player 1 and see what is set for Trackball X Analog and Trackball Y Analog. You don't want anything set for Trackball Y+/- or X+/-, just the 2 Analog settings. So select Trackball Analog X and move the trackball to the side, making sure it picks it up as Mouse X. Then do the same for Analog Y moving it up or down, making sure it recorded Mouse Y.

Now go to General Input options for player 1 and do the same thing. Keep in mind that if you have multiple mice enabled in your ini, the trackball will be found as mouse1, mouse2, or mouse 3 etc. You might want to disable multiple mice in the ini if this is the case, because then the trackball and any other mice devices will just register as the same mouse rather than all different mice. What can happen is if you have multiple mice enabled so they are numbered, your trackball might get registered as mouse #1 one time and mouse #2 another time (it happened to me before).

I can share my ini files if you want. I didn't have to enable the same options you did, but my trackball isn't the same model you have as its an Electric Ice trackball from GroovyGameGear. I have 2 ini files, a mame.ini and a horizont.ini file. This let's me specify horizontal games to be stretched to fill my widescreen TV, while not stretching vertical games. I could also specify other options to only be enabled for horizontal games if I wanted.

I would recommend you just keep your current ini rather than using mine though, since you would need to change things anyway such as the options you already did and the rom directory, at the least.

If you set mouse to 1 in the MAME config it should turn on. There is also a Trackball line and define that as mouse and not keyboard. If you then run MAME with the -mouse on the command line where you start it, that should make the mouse arrow go away when running MAME. It can be annoying to have the cursor from the game plus the mouse arrow scrolling around the screen at the same time.
