error trying to creat a exit key in hyperlaunch hq

trying to change the key from esc to 4. i can remove the esc but cant capture the 4 or any other letter or number

it will save the key but when i go exit out of mame the key wont work. tryed 3 keyboards and all 3 do the same. they allow me to save the key but cant use it. and when i save the key a screen quickly appars then goes and the keys come out in capital.
