Hypersync will not sync with mame

When I go to sync with hypersync using mame database it comes up with message mame will not be synced due to malformed database??

You probably have some bad characters. All instances of & need to be converted to their xml equivalent. & -> &

There's several posts about what characters need to be done but & is the most common by far.
