New Build - Dual Machines / Transformers & Tron Theme 46/32/15

Well It's about time...after a year of planning and acquiring parts we (Lordindy) and me are on our quest to build our machines...Twins if you will for the most part, my will be somewhat of a Transformers Theme while his is going to be Tron based...

I'll update the parts list in a day or two...but for now I wanted to start posting some of the work that has been going on for the past month, while the woodworking just started this past Friday.

There have been so many great build on here that we have been following and some really great ones on-the-go now!!!

It's great to have so much information at hand on here to make these build possible for the majority of people who are not experts at carpentry or electronics...usually just enough knowledge to get into and hopefully out of trouble!

The build will have all the required toys and be a widebody design based mainly on Mameman's excellent plans, with a few modifications. The Support from Zebulon is excellent, I can't say enough about his dedication and willingness to help out and answer questions!

Detailed Parts List (To Be Completed)...

The Pictures below represent some of the work that has taken place on and off for the past month...Everything you see is actually x2 since it's easier to do everything the same at once, as opposed to making 1 and going back and starting all over again...

I first started with the tilt bob...even though we acquired the mot-ion digital plunger, from what I've read the nudge on that thing just ain't what it needs to be...so let's go back old-school...

Up next was the coin door, I had to modify the coin slot to accept Loonies (Canadian $1 coins)...and at the same time change the price insert (I made this myself by printing onto a sheet of Transparency and then spray gluing it onto a sheet of white paper) looks pretty close... Then came the wiring harness for the coin door, as it did not come with one, so I made my own, before I knew the proper pin-outs...on well, it's custom and will work for our builds. Then I acquired some new locks...all keyed alike.

Up next were the CREE's...they are really easy to solder once you do a few!...had to re-route the wire through the center of the Cree so the dome would fit flat...

Then up next was the shaker motor / gear motor...I took a page out of Zebulon's book by combining both on one mount.

Next up was the main board...I wanted everything on one board and all in a modular design...I'm happy with it, though it is a little tight. I found a neat little relay board made by ELK that I use for switching / controlling the power to a power strip with a trigger from the ATX power supply...I could not find one of those smart power bars in Canada for a reasonable price (They were around $50) and the relay was only $10...so works for me...Some of the ATX extension cables that I used for the CREE's...2 sets...1 for the playfield and 1 for the top of the backbox.

Finally I picked up 4 sheets of MDO (Crezon) at $57 per sheet 2 sides good...with this and revisions to Maneman's plans I found a local guy who cut everything on a CNC machine for $200 (I think at $50 per sheet is a deal) considering the amount of time it would have taken to make the cuts by hand, and I don't have a shop or garage...I have all the tools but it's a PITA to take them out and then put everything away ever time you are finished for the day...

So there is a picture of 1 set of material along with Lordlind checkin out his wood...We managed to get the 2 backboxes together in about 4 hours (in the cold!!!)

I had 2 different styles of DMD / Speaker boards made...I just could not decide and had extra space on the 4x8 sheet so why not cut a few extra things...

I was not too sure about the size of the flasher caps...so I had them cut at 30mm...but they were a little snug and tapered so they did not fit too well...so with a little help from the Taper / Reamer solved that issue...they fit like a glove now...

That's it for now...I hope to have some more progress this coming weekend, but once you start the project, it's hard to stop...I really want to see it finished and enjoy it, but I'm sure I'll have lots of fun along the way...and that's what this is about anyways!

Ya...I really wanted to go the DMD route...but I could not convince Lordindy to go that route, and since I wanted to keep them the same, decided to stick with the 15 Wide Screen DMD...definitely will go with a real DMD on the next build!!!

Looks like you're off to a quick start! Wiring looks super clean...I'm about to start on mine and hope it comes out as organized as yours. :) The tilt bob looks like it offers a pretty wide adjustment range...where did you find it? Or did you build it?

I seen baconccpinball (Here is a link...http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?10895-Cab-nudging-with-tilt-bobs-filter-double-presses-with-ahk-script&p=112149&viewfull=1#post112149) on here make the tilt bob like this and I though it was a great idea...it's offers a lot of flexibility in the adjustments and was quite easy to make, I used a lock set hole saw to make the opening. The only thing is I used epoxy instead of plexiglass glue (I prefer the look of Plexiglass to wood)...but I though that since it would be inside the cabinet, outta sight, I can live with it.

Current progress pictures...just starting to put the internal components in...now the real fun stuff starts (at least for me)...

My only concern so far is the placement of the plunger...just a little close to the flippers...I should have gone over 1/4 inch more...Oh well, it's my first build and there are bound to be things come up...I'll just have to remember for my next build!!!
