Recarn Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Sorry if I’ve posted in the wrong part of the forum but I’m new to all of this (forums included) As a long time gamer I’ve set myself the challenge of building my own Arcade Cabinet and I’ve been following some videos on youtube to set up a spare computer ready to run Hyperspin. All was going great, every step was working perfectly then the video assumed I had the Rom’s…( I get the impression its a Taboo to talk about their locations..) But here goes, my question is, do I need to find individual Rom’s or can I get a pack? I’ve found a site where I can see them individually but its hard find a pack (not found any). Another question, Hyperspin when it boots has all the systems in a wheel menu (great by the way) and then lists the games for this systems but there are no games included in HyperSpin. Am I to assume that as there is no pack of Rom’s to match the menu I can remove the ones I’m unable to find for my Cabinet? I hope this makes sense lol. The Tech bit lol, I have Windows 7 with Hyperspin and Rocket Launcher set up but I have not done Hypersync yet, I believe you have to pay, I have no problem paying for all the great artwork and videos etc that someone(s) has gone to great lengths to do but it seems daft that I have the artwork for thousands (no idea how many are included) when I might only end up with 10? I’m hoping to be apart of this community and share my experiences as a noob. Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated. If I need to do one at a time, is there there a way I should save them ready for HyperSpin to use them? Many Thanks Recarn. (If this forum is more for the advanced then is there a different place I can ask for help?)
Metalzoic Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 TLDR I kid I kid. 1. You can grab roms individually from different places if you like. You can also grab them as giant all-in-one type packs from other certain places. 2. Not 100% sure what you're asking, but it sounds like you want to know if you can delete games from the wheel that you don't actually have the rom for. I'm guessing you mean delete that game from your database (also referred to as an XML). The answer is yes, you could delete them. However it would probably be smarter to simply open HyperHQ and check "Roms Only" for that system. That way it should only show games on the wheel that you actually have the rom for and you don't delete stuff unnecessarily that you may need later. 3. If you truly only plan on having a handful of games in your setup then it probably doesn't make sense for you to pay to use Hypersync. Just download the art you need individually instead. However if you want hundreds (or thousands) of games then it can save you a huge amount of time. 4. I'm not sure what you mean by "If I need to do one at a time, is there there a way I should save them ready for HyperSpin to use them?"
Avar Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 It is a taboo in this section but I can say there are simpler ways to get your roms. As Metalzoic said, if you're only after a few specific games here and there you may be good to go with the sites you're using now. If you expect to get swept up in this hobby, Platinum membership with it's additional access does make your life easier. It's really a massive quality of life improvement.
Recarn Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 Metalzoic, Thank you for explaining that HyperSpin can only show what I end up installing. I was dreading trying to delete stuff to tidy up my system once I'm done. Thank you too Avar, Platinum membership is on the list
Recarn Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 My Ultimate goal is to have a cabinet running old consoles (Nes,Snes, etc..) and then classic arcade games I used to play. I don't want/need anything to run stuff like Street Fighter V as I still have my consoles for up to date games. I have every Console i've ever brought but now an Arcade Cabinet seems like the best way to have my collection complete and usable, and look cooler than a floor filed with the multiple systems. I see there is a section for Cabinet Builds so once its under way I will start sharing my pics etc. Still undecided on the cabinet controls. Im thinking of 2 players with a possible trackball in the middle. 6-8 buttons for each. Do the majority of people here have Cabinets or I'm guessing people can play on a PC with a controller?
Avar Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 I do not personally have a cabinet. Eventually I'd like to setup a retro cab build when I have more space and a beefy HyperPin machine. Right now I'm strictly a 16:9 PC HyperSpinner and I do all of my controls through Bliss-Box 4-play.
Recarn Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 Im yet to get into the programs, I've got Hyper and Rlauncher working together I believe next is the Roms and then getting all them running through Emulators etc. Lots of lingo used here and other sites to which I don't know lol. someone said about chd? I googled that and discovered coronary heart disease. I don't think thats right Yup long way to go and lots to learn.

CHDs are effectively compressed images of arcade boards/drives/discs or, in the case of MAME software list games, computer-based system CD's. They take up a lot more space than a standard rom but they contain data that is required in order for their associated roms to be played. I believe they come strictly in "merged" sets, which basically means that one CHD will be used by to play each variant of the rom that requires it. I do not know what the abbreviation stands for. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions. Happy to help.
