SteveBR Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I'm considering purchasing an arcade cabinet with Mame games installed that has the Hyperspin interface. I was told when you select a game to play it will not go back to the Hyperspin interface unless you press a reset button. For example, I select Street Fighter, lose all lives, and game is over. It then goes into SF attract mode. How can I make it go back to the Hyperspin interface automatically within a specified time period of inactivity? Here's the cabinet I'm considering. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=201570558064+&_sacat=0 Any comments about it would be appreciated. I'm new to the Mame world. Thanks.
Metalzoic Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Most people just have their return button mapped so that pressing that at any time takes you right back to the main menu. That's the normal way. If it is running RocketLauncher as well as/behind HyperSpin then you can also set it to return to the main menu after so many minutes of inactivity. For example on mine if it's in a game it will return to HyperSpin after 3 minutes if no one touches it. EDIT: Interesting cabinet design they have. Just be aware that you'll probably still need to learn quite a bit about setting up HyperSpin, RocketLauncher and any emulators & roms you want to be able to play. Or it better come with really good instructions.

I was planning on setting up this machine at public gatherings so I want people to know that there's more than just one game to play. If Street fighter is in attract mode then it might be thought that it's just SF. People unfamiliar with the machine may not know to press the return button to get back to the main menu. (I could put up a sign but people don't always read signs) So by running RocketLauncher behind HyperSpin I can set it to say 30 seconds of inactivity to go back to the main menu? That would be perfect. Would this be my best option to let people know that there's an array of games to be played? Is HyperSpin a good idea for public use or maybe I should go with one of those multicade commercial arcade machines. (I would rather go with HyperSpin because it looks fantastic.)
Metalzoic Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I would go with HyperSpin and RocketLauncher. Mine runs all the time so guests & friends can walk over and start playing anytime. Hyperspin you can set up in attract mode. For example on mine it will stop on a Main Menu system (such as LaserDisc Classics). It will stay on that system/theme until the video for that theme finishes playing. One it finishes playing the Main Menu wheel will spin until it randomly lands on another Main Menu theme and play through that etc... If someone leaves it in-game than after 3 minutes I have mine return to the menu. If you were just running MAME and didn't want a bunch of Main Menu systems, then within the MAME wheel it will do the same thing and cycle from game/theme to game/theme randomly in a never-ending attract mode. You can also use a program called TurVolumeADjuster to set a default baseline volume and idle rules. So on mine when I turn it on it always starts up and sets the a volume at 8% before HyperSpin even launches so it's never to loud (and never to quiet). If someone hasn't touched the controls in 3 minutes then it lowers the volume to mute so it isn't disruptive in the background. As soon as someone touches any control it unmutes and goes right back to 8% volume without a hitch. That way attract mode and the volume both run smooth without you needing to babysit it. However keep in mind that if you buy one pre-fabbed like that there is no knowing how well it is set up, how old the programs are (what version of HyperSpin? Does it also have RocketLauncher? Or an outdated HyperLauncher? What version of MAME? How old? is it even setup right? Bezels? HLSL to make the games look right? on and on...) you might be better off keeping it as-is and hoping they provide excellent tech support on it. Because if you want to customize it you might be looking at scrapping all the software it comes with and needing to start it over (Plus you'll definitely need to add the games to it)... which would defeat the purpose of paying that much for it in the first place. Here's what mine looks like running. I started putting my cab together about a year ago. The initial build took a couple months putting the cab and software together. Since then I've just been customizing and improving the small details. I only run arcade games on mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuXUytLI5fY
