Directing Hyperspin to my own roms

So, what few roms and ISOs I do have are located in a folder with their respective emulator, while also in a folder for each specific title. For example, Xenogears is ripped and located in a folder named Xenogears inside of the Playstation emulator folder, Ninja Gaiden is in a Ninja Gaiden folder inside of NES, and so on. Everything is uncompressed because I have 3TB and don't really care about saving space. Names are also adjusted to remove the clutter of release dates and region tags.

From my understanding, in order to get games to run through Hyperspin, you have to get the metatags to line up with how everything is formatted within Hyperspin at default. Is there a way I can just point my emulators through Hyperspin to find my roms and ISOs the way I have it currently set up? And is there a way so that there isn't 6000 games under each category when I'm only going to have 10-20 games per system at most rather than some of the more extensive collections I've seen?

I currently have everything launching through Steam, and I'd rather not have to redo everything in case Hyperspin and I don't find compatibility with one another.

Your roms can be in the emulator folders like that sure. Mine are the same way. MAME roms/CHDs are in HyperSpin>Emulators>Mame>roms. Demul roms are in HyperSpin>Emulators>DeMul>Roms etc...

HyperSpin populates it's wheel menus based off of your Databases (HyperSpin>Databases>Mame>Mame.xml for example)

So the games rom-names listed in your database must exactly match the actual roms in your folders. If those don't match then one of them (databse or roms) needs to be renamed so they do. If you're only going to have a handful of games per system that shouldn't be hard to do by hand at all... If you don't want 6000 games in each category simply build a database that only has the games you want in it. Or use a database with 1000's of games (fixing the names of only the ones you want), delete/remove all the roms you don't want and tell HyperSpin to only show games in the menu if you have the matching rom for it.

i mean all you really need to do is point RL to that folder and let it create the database for you (a lot of people don't like that because they prefer the hyperspin XML's with all the info but I personally could careless who made what game since I probably know that info for any game actually like)

How do I do that? I don't see any obvious option for that, and I'd rather not have to go through the above method of trimming down the currently available databases.

While that's true, the main reason not to do that is instead of renaming just the roms to match the xml you would have to rename every piece of media (video, wheel, cart, box, theme, etc) to match your non-standard naming. However, since Cypher isn't using standard naming all the media will have to be renamed anyway.

@Cypher, If you open RocketLauncherUI, select your system from the list, and select the Emulators tab there will be a button that will generate an xml for you based on the roms in your rompath.

then he can probably use that XML with one of the renaming tools to rename the rest of his media

Thanks for all of the information guys. I'll tinker around some more and see where I get, but one more question for now:

Is any of this stuff compatible with command line sort of instructions? As of now, I have my PSX games using several script functions to not only launch them in full screen and all of that good stuff, but to point them to specific memory cards. Is it possible to do any of that through the rom listing, or will that be through some other function??

I believe within RL you can set all that up for systems like PS1, etc.
