During Spring of 1993 the Far Eastern development studio Micro Cabin brought their impressive home-computer adventure Xak: The Art of Visual Stage to the Super Famicom. Arriving as a polished update to the PC-8801 and PC-9801 original, this 16-bit port wasn’t the first time the game had been given the remake treatment after outings on the Sharp X68000, PC Engine and MSX2. Despite its many re-imaginings, it’s only as of recent that the game has been localised into English through unofficial fan translation efforts.

While the series is somewhat unknown outside of Japan, those familiar with the Ys and Terranigma will feel right at home with Xak. Featuring top-down action based combat with traditional RPG elements, the game was ahead of its time upon its original release in 1989 - although perhaps a little dated upon its Super Famicom debut.

ROM Hacking group Dynamic Designs recently updated their completed projects page with an English translation for the Super Famicom port of Xak: The Art of Visual Stage. Kickstarting the new year in style, the English patch has been made available as a free download in a range of formats (IPS, BPS, UPS, xDelta) which can be applied to the Japanese ROM of Xak: The Art of Visual Stage.
