MAME NeoGeo MVS Controls for each Game?

Dear Community,

i setup NeoGeo MVS in my HS Setup so far. Everything works well with this system over MAME. I started the First game, set the controls and it plays well. then I wanted to start the next game and wonder why the controls don't work, looked in MAME and there was nothing configured. Set the controls again and than tried the next game, nothing was set. back to the previous played and already setted games... the controls are there.

do I have to set the control for each game separately? I guess not, but how can I manage this with MAME and NeoGeo MVS?

thanks for help

MAME runs MVS as separate systems, so each game has its own cfg file. AES is run as a single system, so there controls count for all games.

Edit: you can however set up a key configuration for all neogeo games. Have a look at e.g. the hotrodse.cfg controller configuration. Perhaps a neogeo.cfg would work as well.

thank you ... so I have to put it as a new system (SNK Neo Geo AES) into hyperspin or is there a way to chance that in MAME directly?

I think you can copy the game's cfg to neogeo.cfg. If that fails you can create a controller config file, and call that from MAME. I may have a closer look on Friday.

maybe I'm reading it wrong? but I've never had that problem before... I have NEO GEO running via mame and setup as it's own system NEO GEO and when I launch Neo Geo games (MVS) the controls are fine and I didn't have to set them up for each game.  I assumed all games that run through mame are already mapped to the controller? the only time I even have to mess with the controls in mame is to personally setup games like robotron and smash tv, etc. or games like Arkanoid and or 720 that require that sensitivity to be set just right.

Some people prefer a different layout for Neo Geo games compared to the rest. This is not unusual if e.g. you use a 7 button player setup.

I know what he wants can be done via the ctrl files; now the question is: can it be done via the cfg files as well.

I don't have my mame open in front of me but doesn't mame have two options.. the option to set the general inputs/controls and then you can set the inputs specifically for whatever game is running if you like. I'm thinking if you set the buttons up in the general inputs it wold apply to every game you run in mame?

That's correct

It would, but he only wants to apply them to all Neo Geo (MVS) games.

yeah, I was thinking he probably could do a workaround by setting up two different mame emulators however that would definitely be a long work around and if there is a easier way it wouldn't make sense to set up another mame emulator for the task but it could be a solution.

I had a few tries, but it's not working this way. My suggestion: use a controller cfg file in stead. You can set it via the ctrlrpath and ctrlr variables in mame.ini. As an example, I've included the controller cfg file that I used in the past. It redefines certain keys for the neogeo system as well.
