I'm new here and trying to nut through the stack of tutorials posts and questions to solve and understand my first install. I know I will eventually get through it by using past posts and questions.

It's a very active forum which is great but honestly guys every time I follow a post of some other noob asking the exact same question I'm trying to have answered, the majority of the first replies are sarcastic belittling or down right insulting and majority of the comments are from admin.

Just the perspective from someone first time installing for the last 3 days.

Maybe I'm just tired ;(

On a good note. There is some great work that has gone in to this project.

Hello and welcome to the Forums!!!

In their defense, many noobs are either lazy or don't know how to search the forums. Usually when the admins get snarky, it's because they have answered that exact same question many, many times before. Another thing to keep in mind is the dates on the posts. Often someone will comment on a post that is a couple years old. The person doesn't even look at the date they are posting to.

Now, with that said, the attitude of the forum here has changed in the last couple years, for the better.

I, personally, have tried to answer many of the questions out there that I can. Trying to allow the devs more time to work and less time answering the easy questions. But, I have noticed my responses have become shorter and with less explanations over the last couple months.

Yes, this is an active forum and it's good to see people jump in and help out. For the beginners out there, take a close look at he following users signatures:

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply.

I might have been a bit harsh. I have been blown away with how well tutorials are written.

hats off to the community for that.

No, not harsh. Truthful! I didn't post for almost a year after becoming a member for fear of being ostracized. But, things have gotten better for sure!

At least you are articulate and use proper spelling, punctuation and capitalization. ;)

And not afraid to search and read! Hats off to you for that. But, if you need some help, please do speak up!

Thanks,

Ron

Thanks allot rfancella, much appreciated.

My install is actually not going too bad. I have most things worked out. I even have some rom's launching now :0. (after 3 days).

One question I do have based on my proposed setup

-I have signed up as a platinum member to get the HyperSync functionality

-My ultimate plan is to run only selected roms (still too many to manually update).

-I have installed the latest MAME.xml from HyperList, which means allot of rom's are showing up which I don't own.

Q: If I run HyperSync will it be gathering media for everything in the xml file?

I don't really want to wast hdd space and bandwidth on unnecessary media.

Yes, it will grab all the associated art that is in your xml. On one of my setups, I scanned the roms with an xml generator and saved that list. Then took the official xml and ran the generated list as an exclude list, so the final xml has only the roms I have in it, but still includes all the extra xml data.

Here is how:

Download the latest stable version of Don's HyperSpin Tools from this thread (Dons-HyperSpin-Tools-4.2.6.zip): http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?20141-Don-s-HyperSpin-Tools-3-0!

Download the newest beta of Don's HyperSpin Tools from this thread (HyperTools-4.3.25.zip): http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?20141-Don-s-HyperSpin-Tools-3-0!&p=290780&viewfull=1#post290780

Extract the directory in the zip files into your HyperSpin folder. The v4.2.6 folder name is 'Don's HyperSpin Tools' and the v4.3.25 folder name is 'HyperTools':

First run the Create new HyperList (folder HyperTools) to get the list of roms you have:

I called this one MAME Have.xml:

Once it's generated, close out the List Generator and open up Dons HyperSpin List Generator (folder Don's HyperSpin Tools).

Choose the MAME wheel from the drop down box. Select your Official MAME xml as your Source. Then in Optional Settings, the Output XML will be the MAME Have.xml. If you have one, point to your mamelist.xml also, otherwise when you scan, it will create one for you. Then click the Scan button.

It will ask if you want to generate a mamelist.xml. Once scanned, you will see this screen:

Click the drop down box that says Export to say Output List. Lastly, at the bottom hit the Export Output List button. It will ask to name and save your new fully populated xml for MAME. If you have backed up your existing MAME.xml, call it that and hit the Save button:

That's it! Your new MAME.xml is fully populated with all the extra tags, but only includes the roms you have.

Hope this helps,

Ron
