MAME Vector game settings problem

Thanks in advance for all the help I've received by just reading previous posts.  I'm currently running Mame 0.153 with the associated ROMs.  Everything is working great and I'm ready to start my arcade build, however, I would like to tweak the seetings on my vector games - they look so faded on my 27" TV using S-Video.  I've watched videos on YouTube on how to tweak the vector.ini file but when I hit the ~ key, the master volume is the only thing I can adjust.  Questions:

1. is HLSL supported in .153 or should I upgrade to a newer version of MAME?

2. If HLSL is supported in .153, why can't I tab through the different settings?

3. Will I be able to make Star Wars and other vector games look better using SVideo on a TV vs. an LCD monitor?

Thanks again for all your help!

153 is oldish... but I think it had HLSL. If it does it should be right in the settings as an option. You might have a specific vector.ini which is where you can adjust vector games specifically (that's how newer versions do it).

Personally after spending hours & hours comparing several versions of MAME back to back with AAE, I decided that AAE update #2 looks hands down better for vector games. It doesn't just look better, but the actual motion of several games is much smoother and more precise (especially the Asteroids games and Tempest). I wouldn't even say it's close so that's my recommendation.

However I haven't tried any Vector games with a version of MAME newer than 175, so it's possible they've improved it lately.

If I decide to use AAE for vector games does that require a new HS wheel? Still wondering why I can't scroll through the settings besides master volume. I have a vector.ini file in my .ini folder. Would screen resolution be a player-I'm running it 800x600?
