drw4013
Hi guys, I'm putting together a new machine to run Hyperspin, and I'm trying to plan my storage. I have a NAS with standard IDE HDDs, and I know that will be fine for a lot of older ROMs that are loaded into system memory before starting. My question is: do any of the newer games (PS1/PS2/Gameube/Wii) benefit from being on a SSD? will loading times differ greatly between an SSD in the HTPC itself vs. standard HDDS on my NAS? Thanks... gigapig
The main time vampire is extraction times so use compression formats which can be read by certain emulators or don't use compression. Some games have multiple files in an archive so that can be messy having those extracted. I think the PS2 emulator uses gzip someone can correct me or suggest others. So unless you are super rich and money is no object or you don't have many disc based ROMs, I would not put games on SSD.
drw4013
So even with the newer games like Wii, all the loading is in the initial extraction?

They are all CD based which is extremely slow compared to even a mechanical drive. If it did load faster you would still running the game at it's intended speed. I have just carried out a test on loading Tekken 5 - which is a 4gb ISO - from both the mechanical drive and an SSD and the load time was 15 seconds from both. The other thing to consider is you don't have to wait for an SSD to spin up.
drw4013
I see...that is helpful. Thanks! What about in-game loading for CD-based games? Like between stages, etc. No difference?
gigapig
Between mechanical and ssd, doubtful. The amount of data that is actually loaded would take seconds compared to the original cd, which was pretty slow on the original Playstation for example. The SSD may last longer if your not constantly writing to it, but they are both prone to fail.
Avar
Only thing SSD would dramatically help with is HS media load times but the difference on a modern system should be purely academic.

Yes that is why I have an SSD with Hyperspin on it , just to make the media load more snappy.
