I am really pleased to finally get going on mame and very happy with the games thus far. I am esp interested with the starwars 1983 vector graphic game and the empire strikes back same genre. What I don't feel great about is navigation .. to me this is cryptic. I cannot figure out what key does what nor can I wrap my head around the tab >> Player 1 controls .. don't have any idea what anything on that page means its all crazy town to me. Cant set anything don't know what a P1 Button 1 is or what it means (fire thumb button .. no context). Any pointers or links to demystifying this would be grateful. I'm certain I am overlooking something but right now its just a little frustrating.

Hi, I’m also new to owning a cabinet and am not sure which mame control should be set to what physical button. Did you end up finding any answers?

OK - these games really need to be played with a mouse - its starts up setup in that way.

mouse X - this is left and right movement on the mouse

mount Y - is up and down.

If up and down feels wrong you can reverse it in the analog setting.

For a cabinet you really need a trackball as that works like a mouse.

here are the default MAME keys

if you want t specified answer to your set up

both of you need to provide some context to your question

as in WHAT do you have connected to your PC???????

keyboard, 360 controller PS3 controller,  generic controller  WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you connect a USB joystick to your PC and open MAME;

MAME will automatically remap all the keys to the buttons it finds.

@trickelly

if you do not know what physical button does what in your set up

load a game  and press your buttons  ,  you will eventually find out what button does what.

I suggest you load a 6 button game such as Street fighter or Mortal Kombat

find high punch , low punch, high kick, low kick ect   and arrange the button layout in your cab similar to a real arcade machine.
