Manufacturer Unknown in xml

Hi, Im editing MAME.xml and i notice that the tags/labels about manufacturer unknown are like this:

<manufacturer>&amp;lt;unknown&amp;gt;</manufacturer>

 

This will show this like... <unknown> instead of unknown

But my question is, why not just put <manufacturer>unknown</manufacturer>?

There is something that im missing about this?

Those tags are generally not edited, and come straight from the MAME -listxml output. You'd have to ask the MAME developers why they chose this format.
