skibadizzle Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 I recently bought a pre-built cabinet (mostly because I have no DIY or wiring skills) that runs HyperSpin. It is setup to only run MAME, and it appears that HyperHQ is set to run as a single cabinet, so when I load Hyperspin it loads straight into the MAME game list. Doing some hunting through the files I discovered that the setup also includes a huge volume of emulators and roms that aren't being used (everything from NES to Sega Naomi). I've managed to get these emulators setup and running games via RocketLauncher; I've even got the AimTrak working on most of them. However, no matter what I try I can't seem to add the emulators into the existing wheel. I've set them up through HyperHQ and checked multi instead of single, but I've noticed that everytime I reopen HyperHQ single will be selected again. I feel like there may be some kind of filtering happening elsewhere as all the Database XML files appear correct for the emulators. Is there anything I'm missing that would be forcing HyperSpin to only launch the MAME list? Or am I better off just starting with a fresh install? Apologies if this is super nooby or against the rules in any way; I've tried everything I can find on Google. Any help would be greatly appreciated EDIT: I realise this is probably super stupid and basic. Looking at the log.txt file I can see that HyperSpin launches MAME.xml at startup, and I assume I need it to start Main Menu instead? I'd there a way to force that? Again, apologies if this is super dumb haha
Spawk Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 You generally won’t get a lot of help with any bought set ups. It’s just impossible for anyone here to know what the original person who set this up did or didn’t do. And you are unlikely to know so we can’t even ask you.You seem to be willing to learn though so I will do my best to help if I can.To me it sounds like you set up other systems in RL so the databases are probably saved in the RL folder. They should be in your Hyperspin folder instead. Multi wheel option in HQ probably didn’t “stick” because it only found 1 database. The mame one.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
skibadizzle Posted December 8, 2020 Author Posted December 8, 2020 Thanks for your reply I absolutely understand the concerns with prebuilt setups, I've seen some very dodgy stuff out there. I always wanted to do the software side of things myself but couldn't find anywhere to build just the cabinet for me, so I was stuck with this. As i said above I'm more than happy to start from scratch if it comes to it, so definitely willing to learn more. I've had a look and all the database files are present within the relevant folders in the /Database folder of my HyperSpin root. However, the date last modified suggests they're not being affected by RL. The databases folder for RL doesn't contain any files. Is it possible the MAME.xml being referenced in the startup log has been put in a custom location? Or is it always pulled from the same folder? Also, is it worth trying to edit the .ini files to force multi mode instead of single? Or will it try to load the MAME.xml regardless? At the moment it feels like HyperHQ isn't talking to HS/RL at all, so none of the changes I make actually have any affect. Let me know if you need any more info, and thanks again for your time
Spawk Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Run from RL and not HS usually does suggest that HS is not connected properly. Funny that MAME games would actually run in that circumstance though. Maybe they are loading through Hyperlaunch? Or heaven forbid HQ itself? This is where I direct people to make sure the settings are correct: Might be a good idea to check and make sure. The not switching to multi mode suggests that the files are "read-only" or maybe you have a some sort of permissions issue. Changing the Menu Mode in settings.ini manually in notepad is a good idea if you haven't tried that already.
Spawk Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I'd only suggest starting over as a last resort. Especially if your controls are all working, they are easily the hardest part of any set up. I personally don't own a cab at all, just use HS with xbox gamepads so I am afraid I wouldn't be a whole lot of help. Artwork might be an issue as well if you don't have platinum membership... well Emumovies is more important than here.
skibadizzle Posted December 8, 2020 Author Posted December 8, 2020 I'm at work at the moment but will check the linked post later on today. I've attached a quick photo of the startup log below just in case that helps at all. Looks like it's launching via hyperspin rather than RL, how would I change that if that is the case? I'll have a look this afternoon to see if the files are read only (boy will I feel dumb if that's what it is haha) and also try changing the settings.ini manually. Glad you agree on restarting as a last resort, really don't want to setup the controls again if I can avoid it. I have all the artwork, videos and sound files in the correct folders etc so can just back them up if needed.
skibadizzle Posted December 8, 2020 Author Posted December 8, 2020 Oh my god you wonderful heroic person! The whole folder for hyperspin was set to read only which meant that none of my changes were taking effect. Unticked read only on everything, updated the wheels via hyperhq, set to multi and everything works as expected! If there wasn't a global pandemic happening I would find you and kiss you!
