The HyperSpin 2 early access beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

4 simple things that SHOULD work, but don't... help!

Hey all--

First, amazing community--you all have been a great help, and even when I haven't posted I've learned so much from this forum. A great resource!

A few random questions that have come up in my experience with my arcade cabinet the last few months, hoping someone can help:

1) I have a 4 player, 7 button setup at each spot (plus the start and select buttons and a joystick). My buttons are 2 rows of three and then a third row with just one button. One glitch I've noticed is that when I try to map buttons, some emulators will not recognize a key and won't let me map it, whereas another one will just fine. So for example, using SNES9x emu, the top row MIDDLE button won't map, but when I use Retroarch for NES it works perfectly and maps with no issues. I tried SNES in Retroarch, and now it's the THIRD button that doesn't work/won't code or map. Why is this? If it's assigned to a keyboard key and works in one emulator, why wouldn't it work all the time? Also, any workaround on this? It really irritates me.

2) I have one system where I only want entries for the games I have to show up. I know I need to click "roms only" in HyperHQ AND enter the roms path, as well as the extensions. I've done each of those. But, when I click into the system in my main menu to go into the subwheel where the games are instead it RE-LOADS the main menu wheel; it acts like it tries to open the games but I don't notice anything. Is there another setting in HS/RL somewhere that needs to be checked? Appreciate the help here....this one has me stumped.

3) Is there an easy way to re-order my emulators in my main menu of HS? Some are out of place now, and I haven't found a place to do this.

4) I have WinXP 32 bit. There is only ONE version of Retroarch that works with that, and I have it running. I found a way to edit it so I could have ALL the cores (or at least more) show up, and I downloaded them, but they WON'T load. Is that because the WinXP 32 version doesn't support them, or is there a way to "force" it even further? I don't love RA, but it's a nice, easy one-stop-shop.

Thanks!

g'day drjea,

1) Controls are the single hardest part of any setup. Partly because there is no "standard". People use an array of different devices. Even if 2 users are using the same type devices, you may find they are setup differently from each other. I have never owned an arcade cabinet so I really can't give you any specific advice. I can share what I do know and hopefully that puts you on the path to finding out why you see that behavior and what may be done about it. Cabs run their own keyboard encoder (iPac or similar). So every button on your panel is already converted to a keystroke. 4 players x9 buttons = 36 so you are using a great portion of the keyboard. You may want to draw this out somewhere so you know what button is assigned to what keystroke. So you'll know that hey "it's the "E" keystroke that doesn't assign when I am in SNES9x. More than likely the "E" is used to turn some feature on/off in that particular emu. The solution will differ from case to case, some emus might let you assign that function to another key? Sometimes it may be better to just assign that button to a different keystroke? But will that cause issues in other emus? Does your iPac allow for different profiles?

2) This is really the ONLY spot with any settings that can cause that behavior. OK technically, a bad "theme" or even a bad "wheel" can cause this as well, but that would affect it all the time! Not just when the filter is turned on. Check the rompath and extension again. A note about extension: 99% of the time just "zip" is needed (or whatever format they are stored in). There is no need to include all the extensions the emu supports or anything like that. These settings are just used to populate the wheel now, they are just a "name checker". You could literally point it to a folder full of text docs named after your games and use the extension "txt".

3) Yes I think you can edit ../HyperSpin/Databases/Main Menu/Main Menu.xml in any word processor.

4) XP... No idea

You're the man, Spawk!

1) It was tricky, because the problem key wasn't mapped anywhere in the emulator I could find. I just manually updated it in the emulator configuration file and it works! I'm so happy!

2) I found the problem...I had [ between the extension types instead of commas. Once I fixed that, works flawlessly.

3) Didn't even know that was there! Success!

4) Still no progress here...but as Meatloaf (could have) said...3 out of 4 ain't bad!
