The HyperSpin 2 early access beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

Best Practices for naming files?

Hi all:

I'm the new guy around here. I've just gotten my NES section almost complete, but I notice that a few wheel art images aren't showing up. I've literally hit F2 over the ROM name, copied it verbatim (less the extension) and pasted it over the wheel art name that I'm trying to load. In one case, I think it might be an issue with the length of the filename, and in other cases I thought it may have been use of the "&" character causing trouble, but I've got other titles with the "&" character linking up properly. Here are the image names giving me trouble (and again, I have confirmed that they match the ROM names):

  • Fox's Peter Pan & The Pirates - The Revenge of Captain Hook (U).png
  • Ninja Gaiden II - The Dark Sword of Chaos (U)
  • Ninja Gaiden III - The Ancient Ship of Doom (U)
  • Spiritual Warfare (U) (V6.1) (Unl)
  • Might & Magic - Secret of the Inner Sanctum (U)
  • Mario is Missing! (U)
  • Joshua & the battle of Jericho (U) (V6.0)(Unl)
  • Ironsword - Wizards & Warriors II (U)
  • Dizzy The Adventurer (U) (Aladdin Compact Cartridge) (Unl)

Also - why doesn't the list use the GoodTools formatting?

Thanks!

Wardrich,

Hello and welcome to the forums!!!

Correct... The proper xml names in your database file should be:

Fox's Peter Pan & The Pirates - The Revenge of Captain Hook (U)

The & is the same as & in xml-speak. ;)

The rom and art filenames should be:

Fox's Peter Pan & The Pirates - The Revenge of Captain Hook (U).png

Just as you have it.

As for the naming convention, it's No-Intro. The community has adopted No-Intro as it's names because the No-Intro set is only working, English (or Translated to English) roms.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Ron

Thanks so much! So the files can use "&" but I need to check that the XML file uses the code any time it's referencing a rom with "&" in it, right?

I do hope you're not doing all the renaming by hand. Use Don's HyperSpin Tools - http://honerbrink.com/?p=189. Point at official xml, then point at rom folder and as long as you're getting the right artwork sets, everything will line up perfectly.

Thanks for the tip - I have been using a program called "BulkRenameUtility" for the major, generic changes (ie: (USA) to (U)) and I've just been hand-editing the ones where I prefer the ROM name over the Hyperspin name (ie: "StarTropics II: Zoda's Revenge" instead of "Zoda's Revenge: Star Tropics II")

Correct. The file names (roms, art and videos) can have the & sign in them. But for xml you have to use & and is the same thing. You are correct.

You can also use the Rom Renamer in HyperTools to rename your art. Just be sure and tell it to not compress them after renaming. ;)

Thanks,

Ron

The biggest drawback to using don's ron renamer (and not a dons issue) is finding a current up to dat .xml file for the emulator. Still don't have one for 3 or 4 of my emus. Ataris and nintendos as well as any others that are finals are easy to find but finding xmls for others is a bitch.
