thomas3120
Hello, Well my comp started giving me trouble and just started to look around for a possible replacement.. and been out of the loop for some time when it comes to comp. hardware. Had a few questions if anyone has a minute. 1) From what I've heard running Hyperspin and emulators is more important to have a fast CPU, correct? 2) Would running Hyperspin and emulators benefit from a CPU with many cores, i.e. Dual core, Quad core or the (new?) 8 core CPUs? 3) What about RAM ...go with DDR3 but which type i.e. 2800-----3200+? 4) Does the video card have to be a beast (I've been using an old Nvidia GTX260) with good results and it has S-video out). Are there any newer Nvidia video cards that still have S-video out? 5) Also, what brand of power supply is considered to be the best and or most durable? (I've had troubles in the past with some dying within a year :/ ) Thomas
whirlybird7
It depends on what you're playing. NES, SNES, Genesis, and MAME will not require a high end CPU. When it comes to the newer CPU's, Intel's i-3 will have plenty of power. As far as RAM goes any DDR3 with of mininum of 4gb will work, as long as your motherboard supports it. thomas3120
Appreciate the replies, My current rig did a good job at running everything: M/B: Gigabyte H81 chipset LGA1150 socket CPU G32XX dual core 4Gb DDR3 2800? GTX260 Video card and using on board sound What intel socket chipset would be/considered now to be near the top? LGA1150(what I have now, prob. a few years old now?) LGA 1155, LGA 2XXX, ....? 4) no it doesn't. pretty sure s video is defunct, definitely not on any cards I have seen in many years. Yes, but unfortunately that's one thing I need (Using S-video 25" CRT TV in my cab). thanks again, Thomas
SIMPLYAUSTIN
Go for 600 series at least. Many features added with this series and onwards... very much worth it Want to save money, buy a older gen i5 and overclock the hell out of it. easy 4+ghz even out of a 1st gen i5. Just get a sealed waterbloack CPU cooler... get a corsair one for around £30 in UK. That way you can even play top end PC games with your GPU. Ram... try to get 8gb and over for future proof. PSU... any named brand... higher the voltage the better as you can almost keep these for life if you get a nice one.
