Retroarch PPSSPP helpful information

I recently made the big switch to RetroArch and I spent some time troubleshooting the PPSSPP core and I thought I would share my findings.  Hopefully this helps someone else..

When I first tried running PSP games from retroarch I was very disappointed with the graphics.  To be quite honest, the games looked horrible compared to the graphics displayed while running the PPSSPP emulator.  I researched online and wasn't able to find a definitive answer to this graphic discrepancy.

Here's what worked for me..

Run HyperLaunchHQ

Load a PSP game via the RetroArch emulator

While the game is up and running open up the RA menu (press F1)

Find and open the Core Settings

Scroll down to find the 2 resolution settings. I'm away from my cabinet right now and can't remember the names of those settings but it's obvious because you will see the 2 resolution references in a row.

Set them to match your monitor.  In my case I had to use 1920X1088.  This is strange because 1920X1080 is NOT an option.

Get back to the main RA menu and SAVE YOUR CONFIG.

Select the Return to Content button.

The game will continue running but won't look any different than it did before.

Exit the game like you normally would from HyperLaunch.

Find your RetroArch Configs folder and rename the newly created librerto PPSSPP config to your normal Hyperspin/Hyperlaunch PSP system name.  In my case this is SONY PSP.

Now run HyperLaunchHQ again and load the PSP game again.

BAM!  Now the graphics look sweet.

Play on..

I'll follow this for later as I need to add PSP.

Does Retroarch make PSP games look sharper, run smoother and clearer like I've seen in some vids. Or should I use a different emu (PPSSPP?)

PPSSPP looks fantastic by itself IMO. Doing the above steps made the RA PPSSPP core look the same to me. I don't believe running PSP games through RA looks any better but it allows you the benefit and simplicity of RA.
