Trouble with esc key and exiting

I recently decided to change OS and rebuild Hyperspin. I have a full backup. On the new install I download a fresh clean copy of hyperspin. Before adding anything to it, I launch it to make sure its good, and it comes up but the esc key does not prompt me to exit. It pauses the animations of the main menu. I haven't touched HyperHQ settings, and verified that ESC was set to exit in HyperHQ. No idea what is going on. I saw when I googled it that there was a thread on here with the same issue, but the link doesn't work due to the new site and nothing comes up when I search. Anyone have any idea what in the world is going on. Its stopping me dead in my tracks.
