epayson85
A very close friend of mine is getting married soon so for the past few months I have been working on a wedding / bachelors gift for him. I finally completed it today so I decided I would share some pictures of how it came out. Whats inside: Motherboard - ECS Thin Mini-ITX H81H3 Processor - Pentium G3420 2x 3.2ghz Memory - Single crucial 4gb 1600 Hard drive - 128gb SSD For controllers I went with 2 wireless 360 controllers. The install wasn't too bad. I installed some #6 bolts from the bottom and propped up the motherboard using nylon washers and nuts. The only real issue was the power and reset buttons were just barely in the way so it had to be installed at an angle. This caused the heatsink to hit the top so you will see in the images I found a low profile fan and heatsink that did the trick. The original buttons work great and I did ended up just replacing the LED. With only using the one hard drive it was no issue getting it to fit. I chose the motherboard cuz it was a great price and the thin mini used an external power source thus a lot cheaper than needing a pico power supply adapter. I found for the most part heat wasn't too bad except in long use as the heat built up inside. I ended up installing 3 40mm fans. They are a little louder than I would like, but when playing the games you can't even hear it. I ended up with the following systems - NES (obviously) SNES Gameboy Gameboy Color Gameboy Advanced N64 (runs really well except a few games because D3d is the only video option that doesn't crash with intel video) Sega Master Sega Genesis Sega Gamegear Basically these are all the systems that him and I played the most during our childhood together.I used xpadder for all the systems except n64. This allowed the controllers to be turned on at any point and still work with the emulators. This way player 2 can jump in at any time without having to restart the game to detect the controller. The reason I didn't do this for N64 is because if you use keyboard controlls it doesn't read the pressure / axis coming from the sticks. For example you can't walk slower or faster in mario 64. The issue I found with this is if player 2s controller isn't turned on when you start an n64 game then all the controller settings for that controller are wiped. So you would have to exit hyperspin and then resetup the controller again the next time you want to play a 2 player game. What I did to stop this was after setting everything up the way I wanted, I made the config files for PJ64 "read only". This prevented PJ64 from changing the settings. The only issue with this is any games that allow player 1 and player 2 to control the main menu screens then the controls will constantly scroll because the game is looking for player 2's x and y axis. All you have to do is turn player 2's controller on and it stops. I figured that was a better compromise. I also got a custom paint job from Custom NES Guy. I don't know if anyone else has used him, but I would highly recommend him. His work is incredible. I supplied him with the image I wanted on top and gave him the colors I wanted (its their wedding colors) and it just came out awesome! https://www.facebook.com/Customnesguy Finally some images - The original box ended up costing me more than the broken console haha Yea I had to do some really nice wrapping paper just for him. Overall it was a fun project from start to finish. Let me know what you all think I'm giving it to him this coming Friday at his Bachelor Party. I just think it will be fun when he opens the gift sees the box and then is even more surprised when he opens it to see the custom paint job / custom unit. I also found original instruction manuals for it as well which I put inside The custom intro video I made for it is a little lengthy but its called the "Nostalgia Entertainment System" so still NES haha
