Doujin (Fan Made) Games vs. Windows 8: How to get them working

Ever since I discovered the Touhou Project through this community, I've found myself more and more interested in the world of Doujin games, essentially Japanese indie games. (More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C5%8Djin_soft)

I kind of always ignored doujin games in the past as I wasn't a fan of anime and some of the Japanese art styles but I've come around on them and discovered that I was stereotyping these games quite a bit and there were a lot of very high quality games being released that were of interest to me. Being a fan of the Neo Geo game Windjammers, I was quite happy to discover a game known as Crazy Power Disc Perfect, essentially an anime styled remake of Windjammers that throws a lot of new twists into the formula, such as the ability to jump.

After having found the game - no easy feat as it was originally released on the internet in 2006 - I quickly discovered that there was a major problem with attempting to run this game in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Within a few seconds of the first match starting, the game would crash. I attempted to debug the issue and found the crash happening in dmsynth.dll, which is included in the DirectMusic API for Windows 8. This same crash appears to be responsible for a lot of other older doujin games crashing too, so I went looking for a fix and found someone had figured this out earlier this year, so I thought I would bring it to the attention of the community.

I was just trying to edit around k2 a little to make it work on windows 8 and accidentally stumbled upon a fix for (at least i think) all fangames that crash on windows 8.

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: download this file and save it anywhere http://www.mediafire.com/download/2hytbp9b2450ta4/dmsynth.dll

Step 2: go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 , find this file, and click properties

Step 3: Click advanced on the security tab

Step 4: Click change owner(yours will have a different owner than mine)

Step 5: Click advanced

Step 6: Click Find Now

Step 7: Scroll down to find "Administrators" (the one my mouse is on) highlight it then click OK

Step 8: Click OK

Step 9: Click Apply then click OK

Step 10: Click on Administrators then click Edit...

Step 11: Make sure you are still on Administrators then click Full Control (this should auto check all boxes)

Step 12: Very Important Create a backup folder and copy your current "dmsynth.dll" into it

Step 13: Copy the downloaded dmsynth.dll into C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Step 14: Select "Replace the file in the destination"

Then enjoy playing fangames without worrying about windows 8 versions or crashes TwitchTurbo1.png

I only tested this on the Kamilia 2 Guy boss fight and some save in I wanna be the favorite difficulty, so please feel free to tell me about any issues. I've now thoroughly tested tons of games with no crashes.

Edit: some users are reporting that after a recent windows update that games crash again, This is because windows updated the dmsynth.sll file.  If this happened to you then just redoing the above guide will fix it once again.

Hope this helps anyone that has had problems trying to get these games to run under Windows 8.
