mamedude1967 Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Hi, I am a complete noob when it comes to Hyperspin. I've managed to partially set up Hyperspin, but I cannot setup my ancient SlikStik classic controller. Is there some sort of configuration file available for my device? I've already contacted Austin and he told I may need to use Xpadder but my device does not show in Windows. My controller works aces in mame, but I need help so I can navigate via the Hyperspin frontend. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I noticed that someone uploaded a file for the tankstick. Is that file compatible with my controller?
gigapig Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I just read the Retroblast review and it mention moving a jumper on the ipac4 board to change it to USB operation. It should show up in windows, what controller board does it have in it?
mamedude1967 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Posted August 21, 2015 To be honest, I really do not know. I originally bought it back in 2006. It has one USB 1.0 and 2 serial plugs. I was one of their last customers. The sad news is it does not show up on Windows. Update: I just that review, now I need to figure out what jumper to move to switch to USB operation. Thanks for the heads-up 8). I could not locate the jumper, I found information on the mini-pac which oddly shows the location of the jumper but have found nothing on the original ipac board.
mamedude1967 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Posted August 21, 2015 After hours of research I've found that "legacy ipac 4" boards have no jumper. I guess the reviewer was referring to the newer ipac 2 boards. Bummer.
gigapig Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Have you any idea what board you have? Have you tried connecting it to another computer? A last resort might be to replace it with the newer equivalent.
wesfranks Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Should be stock (if outdated) Ultimarc hardware. Also should be HID compliant using Windows keyboard and mouse drivers. Couple of things- when you say serial plugs I assume you mean P/S2 mouse/keyboard plugs (not the legacy serial or gameport plugs no longer supported by Windows) and when you say it is working great with MAME, is it currently working with MAME? If it is working currently, it is recognized by Windows. Stupid question, but I assume you looked at changing the controls in HyperHQ under the Controls tab? If it is recognized by Windows but not currently working in MAME, you may have to reset the encodings with the winipac utility from the Ultimarc site. If it still does not work, there is probably a problem with the Ultimarc hardware. If it is not recognized by Windows at all, you probably have a problem with the Ultimarc hardware. As I said, it is HID compliant- fairly straight forward. To sum up- 1. check that you changed controls in Controls tab, not just an ini file; 2. if not working at all try the Ultimarc winipac utility, and 3. email the Ultimarc site for support (used to be Andy Warne, although I have heard it was hit or miss lately) or Ultimarc forums if all else fails. Good luck.
mamedude1967 Posted August 23, 2015 Author Posted August 23, 2015 Have you any idea what board you have? Have you tried connecting it to another computer? A last resort might be to replace it with the newer equivalent. Yes, it's an ipac4 board. But I cannot find and jumper that allows USB.
wesfranks Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 If I might interject- if it is truly a SlikStik controller, either a 2player (ipac) or 4player (ipac4) with a trackball and a spinner as the Classic controller was, then all three wires need to be connected. That is 3 wires to 3 different interfaces- the ipac as a keyboard encoder for joysticks/buttons, the track ball which functions as a full axis mouse controller, and the spinner which is a separate mouse controller locked to the horizontal axis. All three wires need to be connected. From a connection standpoint- if the 2 "serial" plugs are actual serial or gameport plugs, then you are SOL unless you are running the PC hardware and OS you were running back when it was working. Current Windows OS (since Vista, I believe) and current PC hardware doesn't support serial or gameport interfaces. But I believe that the version from '06 was either 3 usb plugs or optional 1 usb and 2 P/S2 keyboard and mouse plugs. These are still supported if you have P/S2 plugs on your motherboard. The later models also supported P/S2 plugs to USB adapter, so you would end up plugging into 3 usb ports. Regardless, if you have all three devices (joysticks/buttons, trackball and spinner) you will have to have all three wires connected. You can not go usb only with your single usb plug. Gigapig's suggestion that you try it on another computer was an excellent troubleshooting suggestion. Did you try this? But also my question about the operation of your controller currently in MAME could also help diagnose your issue. If yes, this indicates that the SlikStik hardware is functional, hooked up correctly, and recognized by Windows. If your controller is not currently running properly in MAME and since you are still looking for a jumper to hook it up "usb only", my further suggestion for troubleshooting would be (in order): 1. SlikStik hooked up correctly- all three wires, then 2. recognized by Windows- (hint- trackball should move Windows mouse cursor in all directions, spinner should move mouse cursor in a horizontal line, and after opening up notepad, joysticks and buttons should type letters numbers and other keyboard keystrokes, 3. works in MAME. Note that default encoding for the SlikStik has always been to MAME defaults. If not functioning in MAME, you may have to restore with the WinIpac utility from Ultimarc, 4. works to control HyperSpin interface. May have to go in and change controls in HyperHQ Controls tab. If 2, 3, and 4 are negative, you likely have an issue with the Ultimarc hardware inside your SlikStik controller. Email Ultimarc support. But first, I would appreciate a reply back about mine and Gigapig's questions. Just out of curiosity and so I won't waste your time due to misunderstanding your situation.

gigapig Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 You would think that the trackball and spinner would be on ps2. You can buy "active" PS2 to USB converters, I have one for my trackball. Make sure it's the active type. Hope this doesn't confuse things
mamedude1967 Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 I just looked it up via google. They cost 7.50 PS plus shipping. I'm thinking about going with option. Thanks.
