daronthomas64 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Normally my hyperspin builds are dedicated machines so since windows xp I have always gone into the registry and changed the shell explorer.exe to my hyperspin.exe. But for some reason when I change it and do a reboot it only boots up to a black screen. The program doesn't load and hyperspin does not show up in the task manager. So I tried adding it into the "startup folder" in the shell:startup but that doesnt work either. Under the task manager hyperspin does show up but it never actually starts or something is stopping it. Any guru's out there can answer that one? I'm not downgrading since these issues are gonna have to be addressed eventually, I would rather just suck it up and get it working now rather than later. BTW: I have had no issues with hyperspin or hyperhq and emulators with windows 10, I do get some glitchy stuff with dwjukebox but tweeking the video settings fixed that.
SIMPLYAUSTIN Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 You have to run a script to let your other programs to boot before Hyperspin.. kind of a wait 30secs (dpepends on your PC, speed and apps on startup. It will not load on startup as it gets knocked by other apps. As for shelling... will have to wait a while for stable shell mods to come out. Other older system mods will not work Im sure mate Simply Austin's YouTube
Guest Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 Shelling is simple on all versions of Windows which are pro and above - so Win7, 8, 10 pro. Simply change the 'Custom UI' group policy to your HS exe Windows will load that instead of loading windows explorer (the desktop). Set that along with auto login and you're done Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Guest Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 Where is that located in the registry? It's not in the registry, it's a group policy. Find the Local Group Policy editor in the start menu / control panel. Then go to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System in the left hand pane. Next find the 'Custom UI' policy on the right pane, double click it. Finally, enter the HS exe path in the box and click OK. Done Reboot and Windows will load directly into HS (or any other exe / script you set in path above) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
daronthomas64 Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 I tried it and it doesn't work. Your instructions were spot on and I found the custom ui but even after enabling it and setting the path to my hyperspin.exe it still loads directly to windows desktop. I created a bat file that shuts off explorer.exe and then starts hyperspin but this is kinda a jankey work around.
Metalzoic Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 OK waiting to see if you figure this out. I'll be upgrading mine to win 10 this weekend

It works a charm. I'll get you some clearer details and screenshots when I'm on my box later. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Guest Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 So here goes: To use group policy to set the Windows shell, i.e. have a different program load instead of explorer.exe you must have the pro version of Windows or above. This includes 7, 8, 10. 1) Open Local Group Policy Editor 2) Under 'User Configuration' on the left, select 'Administrative Templates' then 'System. 3) On the right hand pane, you should now see the group policy, 'Custom User Interface'. Double click this policy to open a new window. 4) On the new window, make sure to enable the policy using the radio buttons. Also make sure to include the full path to the HS exe file. For example - 'C:\HyperSpin\HyperSpin.exe' 5) Click 'OK', then restart. Upon restart Windows will load HyperSpin.exe (or any other exe or script) rather than explorer.exe.
Metalzoic Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 I finally upgraded mine last night, but must not have pro since I can't find that setting at all. However mine does auto-boot into hyperspin after the desktop pops up. Takes a bit longer than Win 7 though. Would booting straight to HS like you're doing there prevent other programs from loading in the background though? (Steam, AHK scripts etc...)

Steam isn't a problem as the client will open automatically when you start a game.Personally, I've made a little script I'm AHK - which loads HS and joytokey with my default profile. I have that set in the group policy. Everything works a charm. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Guest Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Check System in control panel to see which Windows SKU you are using. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Metalzoic Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Mine is home not pro. No worries. I'm just running a script that delays the startup of Hyperspin 30 seconds to give all other programs a chance to execute. Takes longer to boot, but it now loads with perfect focus each time. Then I customized the logon screen to just show my custom Pac-Man logo and set the desktop background to look like my marquee title. Hopefully soon someone will come up with a way to replace the spinning load circle animation and first boot windows icon. Then I'll be set.

I have done EXACTLY that on my Windows 8.1 pro, but this still boots to the desktop and then loads Hypersin. What am I doing wrong?

Guest Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Post a screenshot of the group policy screen Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Guest Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Hope that works Everything is correct there. You must be applying it to a group policy that isn't being applied. Make sure you're following the instructions and are going to the 'Local Group Policy' editor. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
bilbo1161 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Why does it start Hyperspin automatically after launching the desktop though, if it's not the group policy that's doing it?
Guest Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Why does it start Hyperspin automatically after launching the desktop though, if it's not the group policy that's doing it? Because it isn't using the group policy. Do you have a shortcut to HyperSpin in the startup folder in the start menu? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
tommiegunz Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 is their a way to get hyperspin to boot up if you are not using a pro windows version..this is my only hurdle as a fast learning newbie whom just started any of this a few months ago and still egar to learn more..
