Hello everyone, lately I was working on my DOS set up and something just struck me. There were ton of fantastic games that need a system with 16bit support like Win 95,98 or 2000. Is there any way to run those? If there is a way is it possible to make it work within HS?

there are a couple of options.

1. search GOG and get their distributions of the games you are specifically looking for. Gog's rework on old games is outstanding..

2. search the modding scene for custom build executables that can interpret the old code

3. get VMware workstation of Virtual box, install the desires OS on it and use the seamless integration option..

4. if you (still) use Windows 7 get the Windows XP mode..and see if your programs work that way

5. try and install the games you want to play on your current OS and try the compatibility options or get the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit and install it and search the databse it provides for a fix for your game.

There is no "easy way" for options 3-5

I hope this somehow answers your question.

*Edit*

Once you have the games working on your machine it's just a matter of creating a database, adding them to the pclauncher of Rocketlauncher and you should be good to go..

I recommend watching gigapigs tutorials for that.

I'm speaking about more obscure games, so no gog for me. I thought about virtualization but I have absolutely no idea how to make it work with HS.

"obscure" like battle beasts ? virtualization isn't hard.. you basically have a framwork that pretends to be a computer on which you install a "new" OS, that you can access from your desktop.

on the assumption you are using Windows 7 ultimate

you can have a read on windows XP mode

http://searchitchannel.techtarget.com/feature/Setting-up-and-installing-applications-in-Windows-XP-Mode

it basically allows you to seamlessly start programs installed on XP mode on your windows 7 environment..

and I truely recommend that you have a look at the Application Compatibility toolkit. the pre-configured set of the application fixes is quite extensive.

I know what virtualization is, I already said that. But how do I set it up for Hyperspin? So I can automaticaly run the game, instead of running the VM and manualy running the exe.

here is an explenation of what I mean with "seamless"  it will display the applications that run in the Virtual machine on your "native desktop"

http://www.howtogeek.com/171145/use-virtualboxs-seamless-mode-or-vmwares-unity-mode-to-seamlessly-run-programs-from-a-virtual-machine/

in the case of xp mode, it will even publish shortcuts of the virtualized application on your native desktop... now once you have that you can use the pclauncher module to configure the app and how it should behave.

the VM must be running in the background for this to work.

like I said before there is no easy way..and I'm supporting you on basis of hypothesis.. I have not tried this on my rig.

Will try this out and report back if I have any success. Thanks.

Ok, so XP Mode works just like you said, it can distribute shortcuts directly to host OS but there is a major problem. It doesn't support 3D acceleration so it's out of question for any 3dFX/DX games. Virtualbox on the other hand I have no idea if there is any way to connect it with HS.

have you tried installing DXwnd in xpmode to handle the rendering ?

edit..

Oracle's Virtualbox does support hardware acceleration..but it is more of a hassle to get working.

I would test dosbox-x and install win95 in dosbox-x. I have done the virtualization stuff for win 95 and its ok but would be harder to use imho. Good luck

how would you go about launching windows 95 games directly using this technique ?

That is why I said test..:) How would I do it with virtualbox?

I know u can have windows startup with a app. So u can do a whole setup per game. To launched different games in the same windows install maybe the rocket launcher team can help with that portion as off the top of my head I am not sure and not sure if dosbox-x has settings for that. But emulation seems better than virtualization for games imho.

Batch files per game to launch game and swapped in and out of startup folder with per game dosbox.conf files. Many options to do it manually. For something more automated built around a specific roms set if there is one I would check with rl team for additional ideas. Good luck.
