Carny_Priest
Thanks carny_priest, that's a better combination of buttons. I'm probably going to use something close to your layout. I guess I didn't really think about the tilt switches, thats going to be included. I don't know if I want an "extra ball" button, kinda seems like cheating. Lol. Yeah, I had a button hole I could use and some games support a bonus ball buy-in. I'm sure if you wanted to have even fewer buttons on the front panel, you could do away with the Extra Ball button. I'm sure with those games that you can turn off the buy-in feature in the service menu so that it will not even display during play.
byrneaar
what local shop did you get the TV at? I live in Brantford.
Luckydogg420
It was brant stereo, or brant audio. I think its on market st, downtown. Go in and talk with the owner. He really know his stuff. Bring cash. They have a UHD 4k tv there too; if you've never seen one before.
Luckydogg420
I decided against fully de-casing the tv as I started pulling it apart I realized that the screen goes fully to the edge with very little metal frame behind the screen instead of having it around the outer edge like in an LCD. The rear edge was about 1/2" lower then the front and connected to the bottom panel of the tv case holding the speakers in place. I removed the lower rear of the case, that's the cover for the circuit boards. The unscrewed easily. Then I removed the bottom speaker panel from the tv. Next I needed to cut off the lower panel down by about 1/2". Once off of the tv it was easy to make a line and cut the plastic. then I reinstalled the rear panel back onto the tv. The bottom is exposed now (although it was full of air vents and speakers before) but will be covered fully once installed in the cabinet.
Luckydogg420
Now that the tv was cut down to size I grabbed the plunge router to make the channels for the tv to sit in. The inside dimension of the cabinet is 24", and the width of the tv (cut down) is 24 1/4". But the bottom front of the tv has a bulge in the center for the Sony logo. I routed the channels to 3/8" deep allowing some wiggle room and to make it possible to install the tv. (Because of the front bulge) Inside the cabinet I installed 4 angle brackets under the mounting points for the tv's wall mount screw holes. I think this will support the tv well enough. The right side of the cabinet required a slot of 3/4" wide to fit the top of the tv, and the bottom required a slot of 2 1/2" for the bottom of the tv. Here's a pic from the rear, looking forward And one with the tv installed.
Luckydogg420
.....and here's my first problem. With the tv left in its case , it's thicker then originally planned. So now the shooter rod hits the back of the case. The easiest way to fix this will be to remake the front of the cabinet and install the shooter rod 1" lower. Ah well... At least it's an easy fix. byrneaar
Haha that is awesome the owner is my dads buddy from highschool and his wife runs a yoga studio upstairs. Cheers! I might have to make a trip to your place once this thing is complete.
Luckydogg420
While I had the screen installed I was able to mark out the pieces that go in front of, and behind the tv. The front piece will have cabinet instructions on it, and the back piece will get the 5 flasher treatment. These are the last two pieces (I think) for the bottom of the cabinet. Luckydogg420
With the bottom cabinet almost finished, it was time to look for a tv for the back box. Because this tv isn't that important I decided to go with something cheap. I found a 32" RCA LCD used for $100 form kijiji This tv has a huge bezel so I will be de-casing this one and slotting it into the backbox. (Hopefully). Luckydogg420
I had some time today for woodworking, so I remade the front of the cabinet. Everything is the same, but now the shooter rod is an inch lower. Now it won't hit the tv. Then I put it all together again, but this time with the glass installed. Here's the piece that I put in front of and behind the tv. The piece in front is about 4" wide but part of it is hidden under the lockdown bar The rear piece is just under 7" wide and runs from the glass down to the tv bezel. Once everything is painted I think it will look nice.
acrylikhan
Looks like its coming along nicely! Watching this build with great interest!
Luckydogg420
The button holes in the side rails were to small, so I drilled them out with a stepper bit untill they were the right size for the buttons that I had. The lower buttons feel good where they are.
Luckydogg420
The tv I bought for the backbox was bought used from a local kijiji add. The add had been online for a couple weeks, posted for $150 or best offer. On a whim I sent an email for $100, and they took it. I went to get the tv, met the couple in their lobby, plugged it in to check that it worked, gave them the cash and left. After getting home and stepping back to look at it I realized that I had bought 37" tv. Not what I wanted. After thinking it over for a day or two, I traded my 37" with a friend for his 32". Both tv's are RCA. I still get a 32" for $100. He's got a nicer tv. Everyone is happy. So time to sketch up some back box ideas. I de-cased both tv's to measure what size they were and came up with this. The plan is to miter the corners, dado the bezel, and cut a hole in the bottom. The 17" "DMD" screen will hang down into the main cabinet but i should still be able to fold the top down. I had to buy speakers for the backbox in order to measure their location and cut the bezel. Their just cheap car audio speakers from our local surplus store. The bezel that I'm making will be one piece for the two screens and speakers. To cut the speaker holes I used a hole bit in the drill press. So I measured the bezel out and drilled pilot holes in the corners of the screen location. For the speakers I drilled about half way through the plywood......and it screwed up. So I got another piece of wood, ran it through the table saw, measured up the bezel, drilled the speakers, drilled pilot holes in the corners of the monitors..............and realized the piece was turned 90 degrees. Making the piece 28 3/4" x 30". Not 30" x 28 3/4" like I needed. So I stopped for a smoke break. Time to slow down and stop rushing. grabbed a third piece of wood, and cut it proper. The backside of the board has been removed with a plunge router, leaving 3/16" of wood on the front to be the bezel. I used a small circular saw to cut out the center hole of each screen and ended up with this It looks like it will be a nice fit sitting next to the side piece. Luckydogg420
Things are coming together now. Another dry fit, this time for the backbox. I still have to cut a hole in the bottom where the DMD hangs down into the main cabinet, but I will use this hole to run wires into the backbox so it will be dual purpose. And now for the "big reveal". I placed the backbox onto the main cabinet to take a picture. Everything is held together with clamps at this point. But I'm almost at the "glue it together" stage. I bought 2 pipe clamps that are 6' long to hold the front and back tight while gluing.
Luckydogg420
With the box clamped together I drilled the leg bolt holes I then moved onto the backbox. Time to dry fit the tv's in place
Luckydogg420
Time to get sticky and glue this together. The workshop was to cold, so I moved into the basement Another dry fit, putting things together again
Luckydogg420
Once the bottom cabinet was dried, I installed corner braces and re drilled the leg bolt holes
Luckydogg420
As a side job I spent some time cleaning the coin door. It's amazing how well it cleaned up. Then I painted some metal bits metallic red
Luckydogg420
Working back on the bottom of the cabinet, I did a skim coat of wood fill to smooth out the wood grain, so that it won't show through the graphics. That was sanded smooth and then painted. Black for the outside of the cabinet, white on the inside.
Luckydogg420
Then I put some metal pieces back on to make it look good.
Ark Malmeida
Looks Great! It's really coming along quickly now - like the idea of combining the speaker panel and TV bezel into one unit.

Luckydogg420
Thanks Ark; the one piece bezel looks good but it is very flimsy and delicate, this won't matter once the backbox is all put together because everything is supported, but in the meantime I have to be very careful with it. Luckydogg420
Yesterday was a great day. I spent a couple hours adding parts. I mounted the subwoofer in the center back of the cabinet. I measured the location, drilled a pilot hole, and then cut it out with a jig saw. I also installed the front buttons. Start, Exit, and Extra Ball. I plan to wire the one button on the coindoor as insert coin.
Ark Malmeida
I had the same idea for the coin door start button myself. Hoping to get the coin mechs working for fun as well, but I've heard that it gets tedious to have to put coins in for every play.
