Updating Emulators

This question might be unneccessary or abstract; however, I am about to complete this build and happy to get things going when I realized that most of my emulators will have made significant updates in the past months or moving forward (focusing heavily on things like PSX2 and Dolphin, maybe even CEMU).

What is the best practice to update emulators? Is this as easy as deleting the .exe of one and downloading the other to same filepath? I am not the greatest with this by any means and do not want to destroy all my work if I can get this off the ground. Would this be as simple as adjusting the .ini's to reflect the new emulator filepath?

Working off of a Alienware Alpha if that changes anything.

Depends on how much changes. For example for MAME it can mean all new exe as well as the rest of the folder, new roms and new XML/database every time you update.

My last PSX2 update seemed to change enough that it was basically a fresh install from scratch, but maybe it's normally more simple.

Generally if I update something I assume it will be like doing it from square one, but hopefully I can keep my settings and the RLauncher settings don't need much messing with.

I always create a new installation and copy over any bios files and shaders (if applicable), then set the new ini/cfg files manually. Rarely do I copy any configs from the old emu, but generally you can get away with doing that. Exceptions being like in MAME .172 (I think) where it was advised to create new ini files because things had changed.

On a side note you posted this same topic 3 times. I originally posted on one of the other ones but moved my response here and deleted the other 2 threads.

Sorry if anything was repetitive, I dont believe I posted how to update my emulators but I will take your word for it.

I wondered if that's what happened. After I replied I saw another copy of the same topic that only Agent had replied too and a 3rd copy of the topic that had no replies at all. Ha!
