DJQuad Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Not the biggest deal from a security standpoint as it's very tricky to exploit, but to be safe everyone should update their version of 7-zip (7z) to at least version 16.0 and recompress all 7z files with the patched version. http://www.zdnet.com/article/severe-7-zip-vulnerabilities-cause-top-security-software-tools-patch-panic/ http://www.bit-tech.net/news/bits/2016/05/12/7-zip-vulnerabilities/1 http://betanews.com/2016/05/16/7-zip-major-vulnerabilities/ This is one bad side effect from open source. When something is popular the bad guys pour through the code for ways to exploit it.
Metalzoic Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I don't think I use a single file that is kept 7zipped. Should I update the program itself or does that part really matter?
DJQuad Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 7z is one of the most popular formats for compressing roms and such. That's the "preferred" compression format for most packs, some media, etc. Open Windows Explorer and do a search for *.7z .. I personally use zip or rar to compress stuff, but those that use or even have .7z files on their hard drives really should update to be safe.
Metalzoic Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Yeah. I have the program, I just don't use files in 7z format although now that you mention it I'm sure I probably have media packs that came that way. Easier to just delete them though. Thanks for the heads up.
