phantasy Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 No disrespect to the creators and maintainers of the sites and files of any MAME related extras. I'm merely putting this out there with the goal of streamlining things for new people. I still meet so many friends when I load up a MAME game, they get so excited and still in 2016 never even knew one could play arcade games as they were! For years, I've always been frustrated with the lack of DETAIL in mame tutorials when it comes to all the extras. For example, I've yet to find a definitive tutorial that specifies directories for all the extras. Roms and samples I've had down since MAME began. Artwork files: Some make sense as there are default folders for them. Others you have to guess: "If I make a folder of the same name as the zip prefix maybe that will work" EXTRACTING: Only just learned I can make a 'titles.zip' file with all the pics within, and repeat this step for snap.zip and others. Ah, but can I make a titles.7z or rar5 file to save even more space or will MAME not see them? Icons.zip doesn't seem to work in the icons folder as is... not intuitive in that MAME has default non zipped icons already there. Then there is MAMU vs MAMEUI? Which overwrites which? Though I've got that one down, I wish a little more detail was in the read me files for these things. How do I test this in MAME? Oh it's just for MAMEUI, and that file is for frontends. but my biggest going mad moment each periodic update is catver.ini. Progretto's site has four files that should be unzipped into the 'folders' folder... after realizing nothing was seen due to all extracting to subfolders I had to get rid of, I still have two catver ini files- I always ask myself if I should use the one from catveren.zip or genreven.zip when overwriting the other. Is there already a guide that takes care of all the things to do after roms, chd, and samples are in place?
phulshof Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Depends greatly on which front-end you're using, what you're trying to show, and the aspect ratio of your monitor. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
phantasy Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 I am setting up for Hyperspin and standalone MAMEUI as a secondary afterthought. I have both a 4:3 monitor that rotates vertically and a 16:9 widescreen tv hooked up to the Hyperspin PC. Of course, I have to be complicated. Where do the following MAME Extras zip files go? artpreview.zip bosses.zip covers_SL.zip devices.zip ends.zip gameover.zip howto.zip logo.zip manuals.zip manuals_SL.zip scores.zip select.zip snap_SL.zip titles_SL.zip versus.zip Should I make a same-named subfolder for each in the MAME root directory? Leave them zipped or unzipped? Either way, I see no selection tick boxes to enable interacting with these in MAMEUI. Are some of these for vanilla MAME or even pause screen HS setups?
phulshof Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Everything _SL is for the software lists, non-arcade, and very incomplete. Snap and titles are probably the only ones of actual interest to you; perhaps manuals if you want them. The artwork in that set is mostly 4:3; if you need 16:9 you're better off using my MAME set or use RocketLauncher with the RL sets on EmuMovies. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
